He was smart enough to realize that the Congress and Gandhi's independence movement, based on the universal right of a people being allowed to choose their government and destiny, could not with a straight face argue against and deny that same right to independence to the vast majority of Muslim residents of Punjab, KP, Sindh Balochistan, Bengal etc.

And yes, he recognized the inherent depravity and hatred in many of India's political and religious leadership, depravity and hatred we have seen repeatedly over the last 70 plus years as India has continued a brutal occupation of J&K and perpetrated uncountable atrocities on its people.
