What's new

Hassan Rohani | The New Iranian President.

Some one should link a list of candidates for us foreigners who are to busy or lazy to do research, there seems to be little outside knowledge of them and I actually find Iranian politics interesting.

Here are a few prominent ones:

Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei

Of course Khatami is the only one I am familiar with, I will read about the others. Mashaei seems to generate a lot of discussion among the Iranian guys.

Here is a alleged statement from Ghalibaf, my Golders Green dwelling friend:

Potential Presidential Candidate Says Holocaust Denial Was Damaging | Iran Pulse: Must-Reads from Iran Today

P.S. I don't know the authenticity of this.

I'm quite far from Golder's green! slightly racist of you to assume I would live there :cheesy:

So this guy seems ok if those are his statements. I was a bit disappointed he said Iran's biggest enemies are the zionists - but I guess his other statements are better than nothing. He makes some good points.

Ok, I'll support him then.

Edgware? Stanmore? Don't tell me you live in White Hart Lane stadium!

Khatami is also a moderate and is famous for coming up with the "Dialogue between nations" UN policy during his previous presidency. Former Israeli president Moshe Katsav also alleges that he spoke on friendly terms with Khatami during Pope John Paul II's funeral, although Khatami denied this.

 I'm Israeli, but live in the UK. Not in a Jewish community, and I don't support Spurs. I live a long way away from London.

And North London Jews are wimps.

Ah yes. I remember that story of Katsav claiming his spoke in Farsi to Khatami. I don't know if it happened or if he was saying it to wind up the Iranians . They were pictured standing close to each other and apparently they shook hands.

It caused a storm.

A handshake causing a storm eh? only in the middle east.

no offence, but there is no difference,All of them are same. They have not permission and ability to decide about foreign policy,Nuclear issue or do reforms. All they just can do are shut their mouth when it's unnecessary and can destroy our credit( like Holocaust) and decide which dam or stadium should build first and which not while IF IRGC and khameneii accept it.
this is a competition to see which one can kiss khamenei A$$ more than others to will be elected by him.

Hmm, this is sort of what I expected.

Tell me, how can Iranians (if they want to) get rid of Khamenei? is there a process at all in which he can be removed? does the Parliament have any way of deposing him such a vote of no confidence or something?

And would that spark off some sort of civil war?

Shahin Vatani Sorry for going off at you on the middle east forum. Got a bit wound up :)

I had written a response but the thread got closed before I could post it. I don't take anything personal, it's the internet. ;)

Now answering your question, apart from a revolution, the only way to depose the Supreme Leader is if he gets a vote of no confidence from the Assembly of Experts. There was some discussion of this happening during the 2009 protests, although I doubt it will ever happen.

I heard this guy is Ahmadinejad's right hand man, and very much into cultural nationalism, trying to emphasise Iran's pre-Islamic past. his child also married to president's kid. does he have serious chance of winning or will your Ayatollah not allow it given his 'deviant' stance? some Iranian brothers could answer pls?

Yeah, he is an interesting guy for sure. I like his nationalism, however I don't know if he truly believes in it or is saying it to gather popular support.

The establishment in Iran clearly do not like him and there has been a power play between those loyal to Khamenei and Ahmadinejad's group. Now wether he is allowed to run or not is anybody's guess. We will have to wait and see.

you mean to say such thinking has popular support in Iran, he can rally up significant votes of muslims based on that past? I always thought most Iranians are conservative muslims that don't look too kindly on bringing up of ancient past too often. you guys practice nowrooz and all the subtle cultural things, but that is more passively embedded in society. on an explicit, overt level do people other than the zoroastrians, agnostics, etc. also hold this view?
