Churchill had this to say during the debate in British Parliament on the grant of independence to India in 1947. “Liberty is man’s birth right. However to give the reins of government to Congress at the juncture, is to hand over the destiny of hungry millions into the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. Not a botle of water or a loaf of bread shall escape taxation; only the air will be free and the blood of these hungry millions will be on the head of Mr Atlee. India will be lost in political squabbles...It will take a thousand years for them to enter the periphery of philosophy or politics. Today, we hand over the reins of government to men of straw of whom no trace will be found after a few years.”
One hopes that government listens to the warning of Churchill and tries to prove him wrong. –PTI Feature

64 years ago he said this about India.

even today we are suffering from corruption and slow development

on other hand India is now one of the most powerful military and economic powers in the world.

Churchill must have not imagined we could make this much progress

so has India proved Churchill wrong?

It depends on the lens you are viewing it from.

If we are viewing the country from a:

Philthy Rascals' Lens: Dirty, Corrupt, Imbecile, Overpopulated, Poor, Unequal. Mr Churchill is true

Objective Lens: Dirty, Corrupt, Wild but hard-working, fast developing, intellectual, optimistic of a better tomorrow. Basically, a country of infinite possibilities and a billion lives hellbent on making these possibilities real.

I guess Churchill wasnt an optimistic person. Or maybe he was optimistic only for Britain. Probably the kind of mentality that brought Britain down from the Superpower Throne.

As I recall he got booted out in the second term.
He was not a good politician but was good in terms of moral boost for soldiers in WW2. Hence his favouritism. He was not a good PM and was not that good in terms of politics. He got kicked out quickly admired his patriotism but not his policies.

:cheesy:
Yeah Indians are unpredictable , No offence to Churchill but he his wrong to forecast India & its future , we have crossed many ups & downs since 1947 and at every step we are uniting & uniting by bond of nationality.
Corruption, poverty & many other flaws cannot be removed in a day if we see our progress as a nation in last 2-3 decades one will see we are going in right direction of development & that to at a good pace.

so you want to say India ha proved Churchill mostly wrong , right?

He was a classic imperialist, suffered from the white man's burden. Giving his views importance itself is unnecessary as he was an imperialist and his concern for India''s poor is a joke given India's economic fall from top economy to one of the poorest one under the British.

He did hate the congress, but loved Jinnah. He was even in secret mail correspondence with Jinnah. Sure knew how to divide and rule and use the willing brown man. Have to say India proved him wrong, but Pakistan proved him right.

He is a known imperialist and the favorite hero of Chinese Dragon here. Remember he always quotes Churchill's statement " India is a geographical term. It is no more a united nation than the Equator" countless times here.

Churchill, the same guy, who proposed the big disastrous step of invading Turkey (Gallipoli campaign) in First world war to open supply route to Russia and failed miserable leading to 140,000 allies deaths..

The guy then in second world war planned invasion of Norway and failed again. Defeated by Nazi Germany and leading to the London Blitz.

Read this quote from the genius

he said: "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes."

I am sure, he would have defeated Saddam Hussein to the task..

He was a war-monger, racist, and major divide and rule propagandist (Churchill’s divide-and-rule policies found fertile ground among India’s Muslims.)

He failed UK leading to its destruction more than he failed anyone else.. He had an option of joining hands with Nazi Germany and retaining most of the British Empire but since he considered Britain second to none, he ignored the moves..

His inaction caused the 1942 Bengal Famine and his other famous quote about Indians is "I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion"

Cannot imagine what will Indians do if India really becomes something like a developed country.
you are still 100 years from proving him wrong.

India stayed together, was able to develope some kind of consistent system, democratic one, decentralised power with time but was able to build the Indian national identity which binds us. This proved him wrong.

Pakistan proved him right by seeking separation as per British plans and then getting split itself, and offering a place to set one foot in the sub continent at all times for all foreign powers. Thus continuing the legacy of foreign imperialism. Failing to create a workable political system, being ruled by the Junta majority of the time, showing common man incapable of ruling himself without a strong arm doing it for him, thus proving Churchill right.

Not only that..

Churchill condoned the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, explaining that the aggressor was “an ancient State, with the highest sense of national honour and patriotism and with a teeming population and a remarkable energy.”

He advised against intervention when Italy attacked Abyssinia, on the grounds that the victim was not “a fit, worthy, and equal member” of the League of Nations.

and the most sick one of those

"I am strongly in favour of using poison gas against uncivilised tribes."

In the end, he was no less than any Nazi...
