Has anyone actually noticed any shortfall in imported items on store shelves?

This has two sides in my opinion, I know people who used to live pay cheque to pay cheque and are now out of jobs, anecdotally there’s a big increase in beggary, sky rocketing prices of basic food items, petty theft in areas where it wasn’t previously common and so on. From what I can tell, the poor/ middle class are being affected the worse whereas the effects reduce as you go up the socioeconomic ladder.

Seeing that most people on this forum are middle class +....I don't think we have a proper representation of the true effect on the common man.
Also, commodities such as gas/fuel/food tend to be in jeopardy for the lower classes anyway

Grocery storers like Shaheen, Dwatson, Essa Jees and then bigger super markets like Fateh, Carefour, Green Valley etc are still brimming with imported items like perfumes, soaps, shampoos, deodorants, chips/snacks/chocolates etc.

We have been in this import crunch for a good 3 months now. How are these people still bringing in these items? Smuggling?

I personally have not felt any shortage of the stuff I wanted to get, what’s even stranger that all the marts are filled to the brim with people out shopping, you have to wait for long to get served food in restaurants (even the relatively posh ones) to get served. All the malls/ markets are full of people, idk how people are still able to afford it given the financial crunch the country is facing.

This January- dec I visited Pakistan for like a month proper went to malls like 3 times and I swear on everything dear to me

It was filled to the BRIM, I could literally smell everyone's weird mix of sweat and perfume, especially the last time on Friday night, went to local KFC same thing - took me 15-20 minutes to just order my food, same with most famous local restaurants

I took the Metro on I think Tuesday evening 6 ish and station was filled just like the Friday night mall
Mostly regular people but I could definitely see women, men dressed up with makeup and all, going out and about for leisurely activities

Same thing with an amusement park I went to on a workday - filled to the brim

For the bowling alley, it took us 20-30 minutes to get our space, housing societies every f-ing where

But That's on an individual level , I think we have to pay 1.2 $ billion luxury car import bill too Afaik

The dark part is- in the same country a LOT of people are really struggling with inflation, especially after the floods most of our country is struggling, atleast 2-3 beggars on every stop, children selling stuff to feed their family

Many developing countries have extreme bimodality in income and wealth. Some 1% of population at top may eat a dinner of caviar and truffles while 25% at bottom may not have enough bread. It is better to focus on availability and price of flour, cooking oil, vegetables, cooking fuel etc.,

U.K. retail cigarettes with duty paid written on the packet are much much better than any other in the world .

I am a cigarette connoisseur.

Benson hedges Gold in the U.K. at the local shop is different to Benson & Hedges gold in say US Europe etc,it has more tobacco in each cigarette and the tobaccos not dry .

Even the B&H on British airways , virgin etc duty free is different to the one sold on the high street in the U.K. .
I’ve tried silk cut aswell & embassy filter same results .

The Pakistani B&H is horrid which I’ve tried in the U.K. and the Indian cigarettes are equally horrid that I tried .
Also here in the Caribbean Benson and hedges is yuck .

FX shortage. Which has precious little to do with what you write.
The vast majority of our consumer goods, a significant amount of our capital goods and essentially all construction material is local in origin.
Ditto clothes and food.
We feed, clothe and house ourselves. That goes a long way.

Corruption... You can easily pay off a Customs official for a container shipment of mickey mouse household items.

However, LC is a different matter... Which requires bank release of held US Dollars often in much higher value because of the late industrial nature of shipment to support manufacturers.
