Has anyone actually noticed any shortfall in imported items on store shelves?

Have you personally observed any imported item missing from store shelves?

Living in Karachi, I can assure you that there is no shortage of any imported goods in any general store let alone a super market, yet. Which is kinda strange.

Looks like it might be a plot to make Pakistan seem weaker than it actually is.

But who benefits from this?

This is good observation actually. This is unlikely to be smuggling because these products are not valuable enough.

I suspect that demand for these items have crashed, and this is very likely to be old inventory. Consumers have probably moved to alternative/local/cheaper products.
dunno about the value of much else but last time I bought a packet of genuine British made Dunhill International smokes from a tobacconist kiosk was 5 times cheaper than in the UK

Pakistan:£3.00
UK: £14.90
how is it possible without stealing/smuggling/evading taxes?

So you guys don't even make your own snacks, deodorants, etc? Back home, I'll be really surprised to see any of our daily consumption products is made outside of India.

It's thoroughly ridiculous. Local brands exist but a lot of people don't use them and the market is dominated by imported brands - especially in fancy stores.

That means either local brands are incompetent or people love to show off.

.
BTW do you have imported smokes? if so are they sold cheaper than in their origin country?
Haven't seen any imported smokes in regular shops. A lot of cigs are manufactured inside the country, some under license by ITC. Cigs are something people are brand loyal to, so unless you are foreign returned, it is very likely that you are used to an Indian brand and will stick with it.

People who works for their livelihood and grow their own food may need deodorant, only incompetent folks who survives on foreign doles may take pride in flaunting imported items.
Even foreign brands, if any, are made locally in India by the company themselves.

These all Unilever brands are made in Pakistan by Unilever Pakistan, with many production facilities all over the country, there is a unilever Pak main production facility near RahimYar Khan, Pakistan.

The local brands are in addition to it, same with P&G, Nestle.

Engro food is a local Pak brand and competing with Nestle with sales over 100 billion Rs.

Same here in Pakistan.

Such a moronic reponse.

I am talking about daily consumption items like snacks, deodorants etc. You don't need to pay in dollars at the till.
Yes. Only; long established brands and local copies are available.

Engro Corp. yearly sales are in excess of 300 billion Rs. Engro food is part of it with many other subsidiaries.

Foreign brands being sold at par with local brands is highly suspicious. Are these imported from some other country like Indonesia etc. But then the language on the pack would reveal it

.
Just might be rubber banding effects. Unnoticeable to the daily consumer but quite visible when you analyze the volume of items over a period of time.

language is English, if these were fakeries from some other 3rd world country you will be able to tell instantly esp. if you had been using the same brand for decades. they are genuine.
