Information on Karthigai Deepam

Karthika Deepam, Karthikai Vilakkidu or Thrikarthika is a festival of lights that is observed by Hindus of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Kerala. It falls in the month of Kārttikai (mid-November to mid-December) as per Tamil calendar

Karthigai Deepam History

One of the earliest references to the festival is found in the Aganaanooru, a book of poems, which dates back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.). The Aganaanooru clearly states that Karthigai is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Karthigai, as per South Indian calendar. It was one of the most important festivals (peruvizha) of the ancient Tamils, including now the areas of modern Kerala. Avaiyyar, the renowned poet of those times, refers to the festival in her songs. Karthikai Deepam is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Tamil people. The festival finds reference in Sangam literature like Akanaṉūṟu and the poems of Auvaiyar. Karthigai is referred in Sangam literature as Peruvizha.

its the oldest festival celebrated by Tamils much before they started celebrating Deepavali

Keralam celebrates Deepavali in a similar peaceful way, instead of the Northern fireworks. Deepavali is on the first day of Karthika month. (Karthika although is not a month in Malayalam calender. It's a zodiac. But Malayalam Vriśchikam = Tamil Karthigai.)

Safe to say that Diwali is an appropriation of Thrikkarthika/Karthika-Vilakku/Deepavali, like Christmas is of winter solstice. Note that Keralam is arya-dravidian and therefore supports the Rama-Ravana concept. But a separate month (Karkadakam) is dedicated to Ramayanam, thus Deepavali being kept separate, for the most part. This should be enough primary evidence that the Rama-Ramana concept was forced onto an existing festival in many parts of India, à la Christmas in Europe.
