Half of Saudi Arabia's Military Purchases To Be Local

http://www.defensenews.com/story/breaking-news/2016/04/25/united-arab-emirates/83497394/

DUBAI — The world's third largest military spender, Saudi Arabia, is to direct 50 percent of its military purchases toward local industries.

According to Saudi Deputy Crown Prince and Minister of Defense Mohammed bin Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud, the kingdom will launch a government-owned military holding company by the first quarter of 2017 to oversee the development of the local military industry.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia’s defense spending grew by 5.7 percent to $87.2 billion, making it the world’s third-largest spender, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, over taking Russia.

"Does it make sense that we are the world's forth largest military spenders in 2014 and third in 2015 and we do not even have a local military industry?" the 34-year-old prince said during his first televised interview on Al Arabiya television Monday, revealing the Saudi economic vision for 2030.

"We spend more on military than the [British], more than France, and we do not even have a local military industry," he said.

Prince Mohammed said that only two percent of the kingdom's military purchases go to local industry.

"We have a strong demand inside the kingdom for the development of a localized military industry. If we raise the local industry purchases to between 30 and 50 percent we will be able to develop a new, massive industry, which will boost the economy largely and create many jobs," he said.

Its about time. Though need more then simply pumping money into their domestic defence industry. If the education system isnt fixed then it wont be able to support that project for long.

Excellent news and this is an important part of the very ambitious "Saudi Arabia vision 2030".

All NATO-type small arms used by Saudi Arabia are produced in Saudi Arabia alongside ammunition from 9mm up to 20mm cannon shells.
Recently, the factories were upgraded with the help of Denel corporation (of South Africa) to produce mortar bombs and artillery shells up to 155mm caliber.
Many of the light armored vehicles and MRAPs are now produced in Saudi Arabia (Shibl-1, Shibl-2 and Masmak MRAP)
In cooperation with Antonov, Saudi Arabia will produce Antonov Cargo planes in-country
Czech Manufacturer Tatra has an assembly plant in country that already provides medium and heavy transport trucks for Saudi forces
Saudi Arabia already produces the British Thales Damocles targeting pod in country
The same company maintains the spares for the Sniper targeting pods
Taqnia Aernoautics will build a helicopter production facility in country with the help of Sikorsky
The recent F-15SA deal included parts by Al Salam Aircraft company Most notably the front fuselage and the wing portions

Overall, it's not where it needs to be (far from it) but the situation is getting better. After all we only have around 25 million (albeit we have a growing population) locals so this limits the capabilities especially as we are a developing country despite very high living standards.

The youth of KSA today (over 2/3 of the population is below 30 years of age) is highly educated and if the private sector became much more developed (a key area for future success and a key focus area in the "Saudi Arabia vision 2030") an indigenous arms industry could provide thousands upon thousands of jobs for local engineers, manufacturing firms etc.

The focus should be on JVs with fellow Arab, Muslim and allied countries but not only. Cooperation should reach new heights. It's the necessity of the hour for all Arab and Muslim countries. The future is highly promising if given the chance to blossom.

Probably but the numbers today are minimal already so it won't make any difference for either party.
However much greater KSA-PAK defense ties would potentially make a big positive difference for both countries.

Long Live the King.
There are quite a few good things happening between the two countries. Some of them reach the media and become a headline, the rest is deliberately kept wrapped under covers to avoid any disturbance and keep it running as planned.
North Thunder drills was an example of it.I agree with you that there is more potential and we need to explore it and make the bond stronger than ever.Anything for friends and everything for brothers.

Saudi Arabia is making a drone as part of its efforts to develop military industries and strengthen defence capabilities.

Saudi Deputy Crown, Second Deputy Premier and Defence Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud was updated on Thursday on the progress of the pioneering project, reported local Arabic daily Sabq.

The Prince Sultan for Advanced Technologic Research has designed the drone and will undertake the production of the drones.
