HAL Bags Order from Ecuador​

The Defence Public Sector Undertaking, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has secured an order for supply of 7 Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters to Ecuadorian Air Force.

HAL has bagged this order amidst strong competition from M/s. Elbit, M/s. Eurocopter and M/s. Kazan. HAL’s offer of $ 50.7 million for 7 helicopters was about 32% lower than the second lowest bid from M/s. Elbit.

The first helicopter would be delivered by HAL in 6 month’s time. The contract for the supply of helicopters is likely to be signed within a few weeks. This order signifies Ecuador’s confidence in Indian technology and can lead the way for further collaboration. This contract, which will establish HAL internationally, has been extremely significant and hard fought.

HAL has already supplied 76 helicopters to the defence services with excellent serviceability records. The company is presently executing orders for 159 more helicopters for Army and Air Force.

Tata the manufacturers of NANO now own Landrover and Jaguar.

Nano is planned to be exported it attracted lot of interest in Geneva Motor Show and praise from other hope it should be able to compete with Sitara (pun intended).

Do the words Bk-117 ring any bells?

Yes Dhruv does resemble to it but it doesn't mean that maker of BK-117 are so sympthetic to provide the assistance of their own design to some other countries. Morever the avionics suits, Engine and various other subsytems are completely different in both the helicopters.

Go take a look seriously :lol: its like the Dhruv! the same way the ARJuN looks like early model leopards!!!! I bet the Indian designers came up with it all by themselves !!!:lol:

But mate also take a look at the specifications and dimension of both this helicopters in which Dhurv outperform BK-117 in various aspect.


In July 1984, HAL started development of a new 12-seat helicopter known as the ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) which was designed with assistance from MBB in Germany. It followed a similar layout to that of the BK-117 although it is a larger aircraft.

Well nobody denied above thing because consultation itself may bring some resemblance to existing helis but good thing about them is that both the helis are way different in various other aspect apart from similar layout.

I dont have the patience to read through the entire 10 pages, but what i did gather from the first 3 pages was that Dhruv is being mentioned here as a replacement for the Cheetahs/Chetaks.

I apologise if i am rehashing some points mentioned before.

Let me clear the air here.
Dhruv is a helicoptor that has absolutely no category and had no requirement in the Indian Army in the first place. It was designed by the producer without consulting the need of the services. As it turned out, it was a decent heli but the problem was that it did not fit properly in any category.

It was NOT meant to be a replacement for Cheetah/Chetak's(in the Light category) and it WILL NOT be the replacement of these machines. The tender for the replacement of these heli's is being reformulated-197 heli's(again!) from the previous 300+ numbers being touted.

It is NOT meant to be in service with all three arms. The Navy needs a heavy endurance heavy weight chopper which Dhruv is in absolutely no comparison with in these parameters. These news reports that the Dhruv is being rejected by the Navy are absolute crap because the chopper requirements are completely different. This is a classic case of malicious/misleading reporting due to other interests.

Having said all this, Dhruv is indeed a good Heli, particularly good as is domestic. It is a light Utility helicoptor, or a general helicoptor you can say, and as such HAS created a niche for it in the Indian Armed Forces. HAL is indeed following it up with continuous improvement and after sales support and not resting on its laurels. There HAVE been offsprings of Dhruv, most notably the LCH which fulfills a needed capability. So yes it is a success, and it Will spur HAL to develop more and more models which the Armed Forces can buy.

As regards to the problems being faced by the users of Dhruv, there were initial problems and even the IA faced a ton load of problems initially, but hats off to HAL, they tried their best and have speedily resolved all the issues and have kept the product improvement cycle going. Dhruv is getting newer and newer technologies and there is a tie up with US, so that Dhruv gets certified by the FAA or whatever their certifying agency is called so that it can compete and have a better standing at other competitive tenders.

The LCH is a very good investment. We need such helis in the NE and kashmir. we can use the heavier russian Mi-XXs on plains and deserts.

Anyone konws when the LCH is going to be ready.
Some reports say it should be ready by early 2009.

The country’s light helicopter maker, state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), may have hit a jackpot in Latin America. After having sold its advanced light helicopter (ALH) Dhruv to Peru and Ecuador, HAL is looking to secure orders from more countries in that region, including Bolivia.

According to highly placed sources in the ministry of defence (MoD), Bolivia will soon confirm its order to buy five ALH Dhruv shortly. “Latin America could be a good hub for the sale of the ALH.”

So far, countries like Ecuador (seven for $ 51 million) and Peru (ambulance version) have already procured the machine. The aircraft has been priced around Rs 40 crore apiece, 10-15 per cent lower than similar machines in its class. After these two international orders, India is now part of the elite group of countries with a capability to bid for international contracts for helicopters. Till now, the international market was dominated by the US, the European companies and Russia.

Many of the prospective buyers who have expressed interest in the indigenously developed machine are air forces from Latin America, Africa, West Asia, South East Asia and a few Pacific Rim nations. Air forces from around 35 countries have sent in their inquiries, along with requests for demonstrations.

It maybe recalled that HAL’s previous attempts sell the light helicopter to countries like Myanmar and Chile failed to come through on account of political pressure or competitor lobbying. Last year, in what was expected to be a big deal in the international market, the ALH which was shortlisted by the Chilean army for 8-10 machines, lost the deal to the American company Bell Helicopters.

According to sources, though the price offered was competitive, the bid was lost to US-based Bell Helicopters

The contract with the Nepal Air Force is said to have run into rough weather when “technical problems” were detected in one of the two ALHs sold to the country in 2004.

The Dhruv is available in different configurations and is easily adaptable for any role. By the end of the year, the Indian Army is set to take delivery of an armed version of the the ALH.

Recently, the MoD silently endorsed the ALH Dhruv at a two visit of the defence minister AK Antony to the Line of Control (LoC). “We are committed to encourage our defence establishments in the indigenous production of aircraft, helicopters, and other equipment to achieve self-reliance and face challenges in defending the country,”sources said.

The DPSU in its recent meeting with the defence minister had said it has big plans for focusing on the helicopter business and for this purpose plans are afoot to to set up a new helicopter division in Bangalore.

The interiors of the ALH ambulances to be delivered to Peru will be sent to Europe, as HAL is in talks with a few companies specialising in interiors and other accessories required by heli-ambulances.

“The reason for interiors being done in Europe is that there are no firms in India specialising in heli-ambulance interiors,” a HAL source added.

The company is also exploring the domestic market for the medical version of the helicopter and is currently in discussions with major speciality hospitals in the countries, and with the DGCA declaring 2008 as the year of helicopters’ there is a chance that HAL will get a share in the domestic pie, said sources. ...
