HAL HJT-39 Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT), Combat Air Trainer (CAT),Indian Air Force
The HAL HJT 39,Combat Air Trainer (CAT) is an advance Jet Trainer (AJT) Project proposal by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for theIndian Air Force. HAL HJT 39 CAT Programme was Announced at Aero India, in February 2005.

The aircraft is expected to fly within three and half year of go ahead with airframe and engine commonality with HAL HJT-36 Sitara, avionics similar to those of HJT-36 and Hal Tejas. The Project is currently at the advanced design stage.

Design and Features
The HJT-39 will be an all-composite aircraft.Combat Air trainer is Planned as a twin engine transonic “Lead in Fighter Trainer” (LIFT) with a very substantial ground attack capability.

It features Multi Functional Dials (MFD) for tactical aviation, Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) and indigenous CSIO/BEL-developed Head Up Display (HUD) and Up Front Control Panel (UFCP), used on the LCA.The Aircraft is integrated with modern avionics suite. The HUD would display both navigation and weapon aiming. CAT also features redundancy features like stand by instrumentation system, Fly-by-Wire (FBW), hands-on-throttle-and-stick HOTAS), INS along with GPS receiver, flight control computer and display processor. The avionics would be confirming 32-bit dual mil 1553B Bus Standard.

Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) will be implemented for better handling. Some other features of the modern cockpit are automatic pressure cabin and temperature control systems, zero / zero ejection seat and crew emergency escape system. A new Radar is developed for this aircraft.

The HJT-39 also features virtual training capability, with radar simulation, computerised training aids. An item of optional equipment for the HJT-39 is an On-Board Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS).

The Airframe of the aircraft is consists of moderately-swept wing, with no wing-body blending or wing root strakes, a prominent vertical fin. The low wing sweep will give a good low-speed performance and excellent handling characteristics essential for the trainer role. The wing will also have a clean leading edge, while having high-lift devices on the trailing edge, for good runway performance.

Cockpit
HJT-39 is planned to have tandem seat configuration which lets the trainee sit in the Front Cockpit with considerable stagger between the front and rear seats. The cockpit is designed in such a manner to provide occupants the maximum vision. The trainer always look after the trainee’s action and controls. The cockpit will a state of the art glass cockpit having Head up Display (HUD), Head down instruments and weapon aiming controls. The Ergonomics of the cockpit is another key feature of the CAT.

HAL HJT-39 Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT), Combat Air Trainer (CAT),Indian Air Force-Engine
The HJT-39 will be powered by two NPO Saturn AL-55 turbofan engine that is capable of producing 2200 kg of thrust each. With this thrust the aircraft can fly with the maximum speed of 1000 km/h.

The maximum take-of weight with external stores is projected as 9500 kg.

Armaments
The HJT 39 Combat Air trainer (CAT) features 5 hard points. The main gun is integrated in central fuselage and the practice bombs, rockets and missiles are stores in external stores.
