PESHAWAR: The brother of new Pakistan Taliban leader Hakeemullah Mehsud has been killed in a clash with the military in the tribal region where militants hold sway, security officials said Thursday.

Kaleemullah Mehsud was killed on Monday in a shootout in North Waziristan, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan that is considered a militant stronghold

‘Kaleemullah was buried on Wednesday. He was killed on Monday in crossfire with security forces,’ a security official in North Waziristan told AFP.

An intelligence official in the region confirmed the report, but there was no immediate reaction from the Taliban.

Fighting erupted on the outskirts of North Waziristan on Monday, after Taliban rebels fired a missile into a paramilitary camp at Razmak town, killing one soldier and wounding five others, security officials said at the time.

In retaliation, the paramilitaries pounded militant hideouts around Razmak and in neighbouring South Waziristan’s Makeen and Ladha areas, with seven Taliban including Kaleemullah Mehsud killed in the bombardments.

Hakeemullah Mehsud, who has yet to speak to the media or appear in public since his appointment, has two surviving brothers.

The young commander, believed to be about 30, took the reins of the feared Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in late August, after the group finally confirmed the death of leader Baitullah Mehsud in an August five US drone missile strike.

The government blames the TTP — formed by Baitullah Mehsud in late 2007 — for the majority of about 270 attacks and suicide bombings that have killed more than 2,100 people across Pakistan in the past two years.

Our interior minister was also suggesting that Hakeemullah Mehsud was dead and the Taliban had actually appointed his brother who looked like him to avoid admitting his death - does this then mean that the 'fake Hakeemullah Mehsud' is also dead, or is this another brother? :D

Of course, the entire "Hakeemulah's brother pretending to be Hakeemullah' may have been done solely to get Hakeemullah to do something stupid in an effort to prove he was alive that would allow us to target him.

If that was the intention, it hasn't worked, since we have not heard a peep out of Hakeemullah since he was appointed.

Now, does that mean he is dead or smart enough to stay out of the limelight? Staying quiet and out of the media seems to go against his personality since he liked being in the limelight - the images of him taken riding on a captured Hummer etc.

kaleem ullah resembled hakeemullah in many ways so that's why he was send back to pakistan to fit himself in the shoes of hakimullah mehsud but just like always he was sent back to hell where he deserved to go

Hamikullah seems to have Zarkawi fetish - the photo above suggests as much, perhaps soon he will have more in common with Zarkawi, certainly this is on the minds of many.

Newly named PTT chief Hakimullah dead: US
Updated at: 0500 PST, Saturday, October 03, 2009

WASHINGTON: U.S. intelligence agencies believe the newly named leader of the Taliban in Pakistan, Hakimullah Mehsud, might have been killed in a firefight with a rival faction weeks ago, officials said on Friday.

Militants tapped Hakimullah to replace the group's previous leader, Baitullah Mehsud, who was killed by a missile fired from a CIA-piloted drone aircraft in his South Waziristan stronghold on the Afghan border on Aug. 5.

Hakimullah's death, which officials said has yet to be confirmed definitively, would be another setback for a group that has mostly been fighting against Pakistani security forces but also sends militants to join the battle against U.S. and NATO forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

"We're pretty clear that we think he's dead," a U.S. defense official said of Hakimullah.

A counterterrorism official said: "While there's no final confirmation of his death, it's a distinct possibility
."

The officials, who spoke about the intelligence on condition of anonymity, said Hakimullah was believed to have been shot weeks ago during a clash with a rival group in South Waziristan.

U.S. intelligence agencies are still reviewing information to make a final call on his death
.

Baitullah Mehsud, who led an alliance of 13 militant groups known as the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, was blamed for a series of suicide bombings in Pakistan, including the one that killed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

Hakimullah had been described as even more aggressive than Baitullah.

Washington believes the Taliban has been weakened by infighting between factions vying to take command since Baitullah Mehsud's death.

"The point is there is a succession crisis going on," the defense official said, adding there were other contenders to lead the movement. "There are a variety of factions within the Mehsud tribe."

Military aircraft and artillery have been hitting Taliban targets in Waziristan for months, and it is unclear if and when ground forces will move in force.

As part of its campaign to weaken the Taliban, U.S. officials said the Pakistani army has been trying to negotiate with various factions, trying to split them off from harder-line groups loyal to Baitullah.

Several top members of his group, including one of his aides and the spokesman from the Swat valley, have also been captured in recent months.

The Pakistani army believes it has cleared nearly the entire former Taliban bastion in Swat, 80 miles (120 km) northwest of Islamabad, with an offensive launched in April.

While largely forced out of Swat and Bajaur, there are still thousands of well-armed fighters in South Waziristan and other regions.

^^^ So Rehman Malik's (and Pakistani intelligence) comments at the time declaring Hakimullah as having died in a firefight with rivals appear to have been validated now.

Unless this refers to a different event.

Mubarakan!

Taliban in hot water over Hakimullah’s death claims

By Rahimullah Yusufzai

PESHAWAR: The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has come under increased pressure to provide evidence that its new head Hakimullah Mehsud is alive following the comments by US officials that he may be dead.

This is the second time in recent months that the TTP is required to come up with proof that its leader is alive. It had failed to provide evidence of life of its founder Baitullah Mehsud and had to eventually concede his death in the US drone attack on the night of August 5-6 after denials for around a month. In the process, the TTP credibility was damaged and the government came out on top because its claim about Baitullahís death proved true.

The same sequence of events could take place in Hakimullahís case. Government officials, both civil and military, have been confidently claiming for weeks that he died in a shootout between his supporters and those of Maulana Waliur Rahman, his rival for the TTP leadership following Baitullahís demise. Though someone claiming to be Hakimullah spoke to at least two journalists by phone subsequently to deny reports of differences in the TTP ranks and to announce his appointment as its new head, government functionaries kept insisting that the caller was Hakimullahís brother who resembled him. The government also studied past recordings of Hakimullahís voice and compared it with that of the caller to journalists recently and came to the conclusion that these voices were of different persons.

Now that the US intelligence agents too were leaning towards the conclusion that Hakimullah is dead, the claim made earlier by Pakistan government functionaries has got greater credence.

Fond of publicity and known to enjoy media attention, Hakimullah wasnít expected to avoid reporters for long and shy away from making a videotape to declare that he was alive. But he hasnít done that even after weeks and further delay in providing evidence of his life would mean that he is dead or following a smart plan for keeping everybody guessing.

The situation regarding Hakimullahís fate could become clear in a day or two as the TTP had plans to invite journalists to its South Waziristan stronghold to meet its commanders
. The last time Hakimullah met members of the media was in Orakzai Agency, but that was when Baitullah was alive and the former was commander for the tribal agencies of Orakzai, Khyber and Kurram.

Meanwhile, official sources said Waliur Rahman had recovered from the injuries sustained by him during the clash between his men and those of Hakimullah. He would surely emerge stronger if Hakimullah was no more in this world.

The loss of strong leaders and the resultant disarray in TTP ranks has come at a time when Pakistanís security forces have firmed plans to launch a major operation against the TTP militants in the Mehsud tribal territory of South Waziristan. The authorities moved one step forward on Saturday in finalising plans to undertake this mission when a Jirga of Mehsud tribal elders held a meeting with Turkestan Bhittani, commander of a pro-government militant faction that has announced support for the military in its battle against late Baitullahís group. The Qaumi Jirga of Mehsud elders are being asked by Bhittani to join hands with him and the government to tackle all militants who have picked up the gun against Pakistanís security forces
.

Great news.. 2009 seems to be the 'The Year the muppets died'.. Great work by the Pakistan Army, they have shown tremendous maturity since the war in Bajaur started. These enemy of the states are going to face defeat and their days are numbered.
