Ethnic and nationalism card are an unwelcome one. It's easy to use and seems cost free and effective, but you always pay for it in ways you will never anticipate. Although in principle, acknowledging one's heritage or drawing from it is not necessarily negative, however you have to wonder what it adds to the debate, and why it is is so popular in Pakistan as an opposition narrative throughout our history. Perhaps it's something to do with dynamics of the certain forms of dissent that states find hard to challenge and hard to silence.

You can see this dynamic in Pakistan with nationalistic and religious political activism, and in the Middle East where dictators manage to shut down pretty much all secular dissent, hence ethnic or religious extremes inadvertently become focal points of all dissent. Undesirable as that may be. I'm probably reading too much into this, it's just a case of a politician saying something they perceive is popular for their demographic, but it's an interesting subject if picked apart.
