Gwadar Port may be given to China

The News Editorial - Changing hands

The port of Gwadar has seemed to fall short of expected potential – but that may be about to change. Chinese money and Chinese labour built much of it, and the expectation may have been that the contract for operating the new port would have gone in the same direction – but it went to the Port of Singapore Authority instead. The PSA has a contract to operate the port for the next forty years, but has failed to make the investment that it was contracted to make and has yet to dock and unload a single ship. Enter the Chinese – maybe. We now enter the realm of ‘official sources’ who are said to have confirmed that there is now an ‘understanding’ between ourselves and the Chinese that the contract will be seen as void between ourselves and the PSA and instead the port will be operated by the Chinese. Maybe.

Contracts such as that which we have with the PSA are not things you walk away from on a whim. They take years to develop and changing ships mid-voyage is no easy matter. However, there are a number of points which would suggest that the Chinese may be more profitable partners for us at Gwadar. Not the least of these is the vast tonnage of shipping that they could bring in, the oil and gas termini they could develop and the potential for infrastructure development that would follow along. We have already inked an agreement with the Chinese for a feasibility study of a rail link roughly parallel to Karakoram Highway. It is no stretch of the imagination to see that link running from Kashgar to Gwadar in the next ten to fifteen years. They are already working with us in Gilgit-Baltistan on the upgrading of the KKH to an all-weather highway, they are resilient people and able to work in the sometimes difficult environment we present. Before we get carried away with the possibilities, there is a world of difference between an ‘understanding’ and a done deal. The geopolitical ramifications are complex and some of our existing partners may not take kindly to this change of tack – but there is a whiff of change in that onshore breeze.

What kind of a headline is "Gwadar Port may be given to China" ? It will be leased to Chinese port authorities and NOT given to them. Nobody is giving Pakistan's land to anybody including Chinese. These journalists don't understand the real meaning of words they use.

Exactly. Nobody is giving Gawadar to anyone. Obviously it is Pakistan's land and it can't be given to anyone even the chinese. Anyways our media and journalists should choose better words while making a story.

Gwadar Port Authority paid Rs32m since 2008, NA told

ISLAMABAD: The Minister for Ports and Shipping, Babar Ghouri, informed the National Assembly on Monday that the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) had paid Rs32.899 million to Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) as its share of revenue from port operations since March 2008.

In a written reply to a question by MNA Shaheen Ishfaq of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, the federal minister said that operations of Gwadar Port had been transferred to the PSA under a concession agreement.

Under the agreement, he said, the PSA was required to pay the share of revenue to the GPA at a rate of nine per cent of the total revenue earned by the PSA through operations.

The PML-N MNA had asked the minister to inform the House about the losses suffered and profits earned from Gwadar Port operations since March 1, 2008.

The minister further told the House that the government had released Rs649.3 million to Gwadar Port Authority out of a total allocation of Rs804.9 million in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

About the non-development budget, the minister said the government had allocated Rs200 million for the ongoing financial year, but so far only Rs40 million had been released.

In response to a question by another PML-N MNA, Rana Mahmoodul Hassan, the minister denied that shipping companies at several ports of the country were charging an additional surcharge of 10 dollars per container as “international security port surcharge”.

GOLD AND SILVER RESERVES:

The Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Syed Naveed Qamar, in response to a question by Shaheen Ishfaq informed the House that the country had a total of 49.73 million ounces of gold and silver reserves. He said 47.24 million ounces of gold reserves had been discovered at Saindak and Rekodiq projects whereas 2.49 million ounces of silver reserves were present at Saindak project.

In reply to a question by PML-N’s Nuzhat Sadiq, the minister told the House that the gas utility companies had earned a total of Rs181.1 billion under the head of natural gas charges from August last year to March this year.

Firstly there was no India, British crept in to mughal kingdom.

Secondly, its our land and we decide who we let in, give to, let establish a base etc.

If we in the future become slaves of Chinese and have no say in the matter of our land, then that's our mistake, a mistake we are allowed as utterly only concerns us.

why your backside burning and why you concerned for us?.

Pakistan bought Gwadar in the sixties from Oman; at that time Pakistan did not have much reserve to buy the huge land mass. I think, the person who took that decision of buying Gwadar must be a visionary.
