New York authorities on Friday charged Tyrese Devon Haspil in the murder of co-founder of Pathao, an apps-based ride sharing company, Fahim Saleh, 33, in his Manhattan apartment.
The accused has, however, no prior criminal record, according to a New York Times report presented with reference to the local police.
New York detectives started investigating Haspil, 21, after finding text messages in Fahim’s mobile phone accusing him of stealing the latter’s money.
‘Mr Haspil was Mr Saleh’s executive assistant and handled his finances and personal matters. It is also believed that he owed the victim a significant amount of money,’ Rodney Harrison, the New York Police Department’s top detective, told reporters.
Police did not confirm when the alleged transaction occurred and how much money Haspil owed to his former employer Fahim, who also founded an apps-based business enterprise in Nigeria.
Haspil’s credit card was allegedly used after the murder to purchase an electric saw and cleaning products, the Daily Beast reported with reference to police sources.
The card was also allegedly used to pay for travel to and from Fahim’s apartment.
Police confirmed that Haspil assaulted the victim at the entrance to the apartment on Monday.
Investigators believe that he returned to the apartment on Tuesday to dismember the body.
The police were of the opinion that the killer might have been waiting for the victim’s blood to coagulate before dismembering the body.
Haspil, who allegedly swiped US$1,00,000 from Fahim, was arrested on Friday in connection with the brutal murder of the Bangladeshi-origin US millionaire technology entrepreneur.
Fahim, instead of informing the local authorities, arranged a repayment plan for Haspil, who, at one point, declined to comply with the deal.
Haspil allegedly used an electric shock weapon on Fahim and then stabbed him to death on Monday.
The victim died of multiple stab wounds to the neck and the torso and it was a homicide, according to the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Fahim co-founded Parthao, in 2015, which valued over US$100 million, according to Fahim’s LinkedIn page.
He also co-founded another on-demand motorcycle ride-sharing company Gokado as its CEO in Lagos, Nigeria, and Adventure Capital, a venture capital firm, in New York in 2018.
