Grid being set up to import electricity from India

Thats a stupid logic.. You are using data from 2007, so these are 2007 rankings.. The report may have been published 4 years later in 2011...

It's 2011 rankings, & 2009 data:

The 2011 EDI:

Using 2009 data for the four energy development indicators discussed above, we have calculated the 2011 EDI (Figure 1). The minimum and maximum values used in the calculation of the 2011 EDI are shown in Table 1 below.

Download here the 2011 EDI values and component by country.

Access to Electricity

Its all about the distance ... Borders are irrelevant to the % energy lost in transmission.. Distance is not

In that case, I guess it's cool as long as we make a profit and the money is used to set up more power plants for the other states.

The govt shouldnt allow this !!!
We in chennai face daily an hour current cuts and industry faces 2 hour power cut daily!!!
The rural parts of TN face upto 5 hours and some other states have situations worse thaan ours !!!
So the govt must fullfill the energy needs of our country be4 trying to help another country !!!

Its not possible to get electricity from say rajasthan to chennai man.. Too much % loss in transmission, almost half of it will be wasted and the remaining which does reach there will be at a very steep price(consumers will have to pay for the losses i suppose)... Thats why its being offered to Pakistan.. And it wont be free ofcourse, will be getting hard cash for it..

It's 2011 rankings, & 2009 data:

Access to Electricity

All India generating capacity of Power utilities: 1,85,496.62 MW (As on 31-11-2011)

Central Electricity Authority

Power Generation in India : Capacity grows by 37% in four years « Agneya Carbon Ventures

India's population is only 7 times bigger then pakistan but our electricity generation is 10 times bigger then pakistan and the gap is becoming greater day by day as we are adding thousands of MW of power generation capacity every month.

I am not privy to the exact figures but a simple google search provides me with the following data:

India:
As of October, we have an installed capacity of 1,82,689.62 MW ( Power Sector at a Glance ALL INDIA )
Population of India: 1.21 billion people (2011 census)
capacity per capita: 150.983 MW/million inhabitants.

Pakistan:
~ 20000 MW ( Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan )
Note: Please provide a better source if available. I was unable to find any in open source!
Population of Pakistan: 177 million (estimated - Pakistan )
capacity per capita: 112.99 MW/ million

So based on installed capacity alone, we can see a major difference though the figures for pakistan are suspect at this point due to lack of any recent census data apart from the question of actual installed capacity.

Add to this the fact that most of Pakistan's installed capacity is based on expensive fuel oil based generation unlike India and I can easily see the logic of India supplying power to Pakistan!

But it can be transported to UP or MP right? They too have power problem !!!

Cool... so in about a months time, India added about 2800 MW of generation capacity. This tallies with the ~ 20000 MW that was to be added in this year!

Take example of Gujarat which exports electricity to Rajasthan,MP,maharastra, etc so it can be supplied to nearby states if possible and feasible, coz there is a threat to this power grid from bombarment. But if, Pakistan army secures it then this prob could be resolved.
I m in support of this progress between Indo-pak trade...

if we stupids look india they make every big city own coal power plants can be seen from google earth and we dump our world second largest coal reserve under desert and looking power from india. our future gen will be so thankful to us we keep our gold oil coal reserve save for them :hitwall:

punjab doesnt seem to have any significant power shortage. In any case, i'm in full support to sell power to PK.
Punjab does have 2 to 3 hrs powecuts even in winters. Not much electricity is produced around the Amritsar area, all the thermal power production in Punjab is along the Haryana,Punjab border and Hydro along Himachal and Punjab border.
But if selling electricity to Pakistan is more profitable than we should go ahead with it :smokin:

So from the same data, electrification rate for India is 75% and Pakistan is 62 %

Access to Electricity

And I guess electricity is what we are talking of .... :)

The data also says that electrification % for Sri Lanka is 77% (greater than India's), whereas Sri Lanka's Energy Development Index (EDI) is lower than Pakistan & India. Sri Lanka's EDI is 0.258, whereas Pakistan's is 0.27 & India's 0.294.

At the end of the day, all the sources (besides that typo mistake) indicate that India's & Pakistan's access to electricity, as well as electricity consumption per capita are very similar.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...O2011_For%20WEB.xls+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

With all the sources I have shown & quoted, electricity consumption per capita in Pakistan & India are very similar, so there must be some typo mistake in that excel file.

This is the answer to your post:

So per capita electricty consumption, 733 kWh for India and 470 kWh for Pakistan.

P.S: Trading economics is not a very reliable source, worse than Wiki imo.
