I dont think they fear here...what they fear is the social media and press... and bad popularity ratings.

In the passed politicans with a good idea that made a huge change to the better in the very long run (hard to understand for most people including press) did not fear media...there was no shitstorm for every unpopular but needed decission... and they had the backbone to went through trouble.

Good example NATO Double Track Decision... in Germany no one wanted it, the press run mad on the politics... mass of people went on street to protest...but the majority in the Bundestag voted pro NATO Double Track Decision... this was in fact the last brick that overpowered the sovjet economy... NATO won the weapon race and USSR nearly collapsed under weapon race...and offered negotiations with the goal to ban nuclear armed middle-range missiles from Europe completely and suddenly accepted that human rights were a major point of the negotiations... today with the power of the social media and press no of the weak leaders of the world would have the balls to went through such a trouble.. only if you are able to jail journalists and use force against protester to make them mouth shut....

The acceptance of Germany to allow to station Pershing II on German soil was key to the success... against the huge majority of the citizen..

If this political decission would not been taken most likely we would still have a west and east conflict... GDR and FRG and a world split into two groups...the people never understood the long run plan of the politics to overcome the cold war with a ultimative final weapon race the sovjet wasn´t able anymore to follow... The west exactly knowed the poor soviet economy and economy shortcomings of the east in general...

Later it was said the USA armed till they were ill, the sovjet armed till they collapsed. But this ended the Cold war without a single shoot fired.
