I think you underestimate the fact that while the common madrassa educated razakar hates India and worships China, the entire Political class of BD is now slowly changing!

While AL has traditionally been a supporter of India, even the BNP which at one point of time has tried to incite and arm the NE insurgencies is changing. The BNP also recognizes the ground realities today.

This change of heart of the only major anti-Indian party is because since 2001, Indian economy has boomed and like Pakistan, they have also understood(slowly) that confrontation with India will only make them poorer - both as a nation and as a party. Its simply the economics of it.

While it is true that China is much bigger and better off as an economy, the fact that BD is surrounded on 3 sides by India means that what matters is not the absolute comparison b/w India and China, but the fact that they must 'percieve' India as a neighbour to be a booming economy and power.

The US now siding with India is also converting a few unfaithfuls, they enjoy tremendous goodwill in BD

If our economy starts slumping like it is starting to now, we will go back to the same morass of having low 'international weight' as was the case earlier.
Its simply upto us as to how we manage our relations with BD now. Cannot ask for more than we have already got from them.

My 2 cents:

1.) Now, we have P chidambaram as Finance minister who have well understood the security situations as home minister and faced certain problems with the oldie pranab mukharjee who were not releaseing funds.

I think with new FM things will change positively.

3. Then why is India building up such a force beside various other acquisitions making her the largest importer of arms? The first reason is GRAFT. The high and mighty in politics and administration are direct beneficiaries out of this mad rush of procurement.

3. However, Indian Govt needs to justify this build-up and huge expenditure to the people. Pakistan is in distress. You cannot fight China. Then why is the GOI spending so much on def when people are committing suicide due to hunger? There can be one justification. GOI will do what Subramaniam Swamy has prescribes. ANNEX BD. This is a simple rationale.

We can defend off China but Only if China attacks, again mostly correct!

Imagined or otherwise, a country has to secure itself whether threat or no threat, we live in a dangerous neighbourhood, the day we lower our defences, Pakistan may attack us..

The expenditure is not huge compared to our economy, Pakistan is always in destress. But we can defend ourselves quite successfully.

To annexing BD, yes be afraid, be very afraid! This is called psyops, deterring without threatening!

Neither is China keen to attack India, nor can India ever hope to counter China even with 20 such Strike Corps. The real task of this Strike Corps is to augment the Eastern Command when ops start against BD.

India has a strategy to prepare and fight a two front war.

Now prepare for a three front war.

The mere fact that the finance ministry struck down the proposal clearly identifies that the money in the kitty is not enough. This against India's enemy No.1, is indeed surprising.

I dont know how the money for upgrading the air bases against China and equipping them with additional aircraft and building of new air bases as well as constructing new road infrastructure in NE etc will fare.

Well there are Muslim minds at work in India along with the Hindu minds. And at this moment, you should worry about Christian minds.

India and China will not goto war because both stand to lose tremendously in economic terms.
The strike corps is to ensure that we have adequate level of offensive power in China as well, not just remain defensive.

Lastly, there is absolutely no gain in annexing Bangladesh. Bangladesh is not a prosperous country, it has no significant natural resources, all the resources that are there are in the Bay of Bengal in any case. It is highly overloaded with population. It has a very poor populace with no significant technological capacity. It is an area highly prone to natural disasters thus increasing poverty.

So all in all, yes, we could annex Bangladesh, but it makes no benefit to do so. Much better to let BD manage its own affairs and shoot those who try to jump the border.
