Dhaka, Jan 21 (bdnews24.com) A senior leader of the main opposition BNP has criticised the government for its "submissive" foreign policies, referring to recent abduction of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member and various kidnappings and killings along the border.
"The government has surrendered itself to India. There are incidents of abductions and killings along the border, as they (the government) are compromising the country's interests," barrister Moudud Ahmed said at a human chain programme on Saturday.
The protest programme was organised by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party in front of the National Press Club, against what the organisation called torture of Bangladeshi citizens living along the border by India's Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
Moudud, also a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the government has completely failed in preserving the country's interests. He said: "India considers the Bangladeshi government as one of their provincial governments. This is why they (India) are carrying out various incidents along the border (with impunity)."
He alleged that besides killing the teenage girl Felani a year ago, the BSF had abducted many Bangladeshi citizens and tortured them. "Videos (of those tortures) have been published," he claimed.
According to Moudud, there is no parallel example across the world of border troops intruding into a sovereign country and abducting and killing its citizens. "India considers Bangladesh its willing slave, and so is staging various incidents (along the border)," he alleged.
The former law minister said the AL-led coalition government does not even protest these incidents.
He called on the people to unite under the leadership of BNP chief Khaleda Zia in the demonstration to repel this situation.
