The federal government has turned down the registration applications of as many as 42 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) due to security concerns.

Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency had previously raised objection over suspicious activities of international NGOs working in Pakistan, after which many of them were banned in the country.

Besides, the country is also tightening its control over the cash flowing into and out of Pakistan, after being placed on the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) greylist.

The applications were sent to the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) for signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoU). The signing enables INGOs open bank accounts in the country and to receive foreign funding.

EAD Additional Secretary and the official spokesperson Zulfiqar Haider confirmed the news on Friday.

“The decision has been taken by a committee strictly following policy on registration of NGOs,” he said.

“It is the collective decision of the committee and no particular department,” Haider added.

Pakistan reviewed its strategy after FATF, in February last year, declared the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing regimes non-compliant.

Any national organization that wants to avail foreign funding for its projects has to get registered with EAD. So far, there are 53 registered NGOs with the EAD

This is very good. Is going to agitate US and others who provide funding for PTM and the likes.
