ISLAMABAD: In a scathing rejoinder to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent statements on the country’s judiciary, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Asif Saeed Khosa on Wednesday said it was the federal government that allowed ailing former premier Nawaz Sharif to go abroad for medical treatment.

“The Lahore High Court only settled the modalities of the matter,” the CJP said in reference to PM Imran’s statements wherein he urged Justice Khosa and his successor to restore the public’s trust in Pakistan’s judicial system.

Addressing a ceremony at the Supreme Court, CJP Khosa said he would not comment on the removal of Nawaz Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL) because the case was still pending in court.

He urged PM Imran to refrain from statements alluding to the judiciary’s powers. “The prime minister is the elected chief executive. We respect his position but no one should taunt us about powerful people,” said CJP Khosa.

“This Supreme Court has convicted two prime ministers and is going to soon decide the case of a former army chief. This is a new judiciary since its restoration in March 2009 and we will act in accordance with the law.”

The CJP also opposed the PM’s statements about the functioning of the country’s judicial system. “Everyone should know that the judges are working hard but no one is perfect,” said Justice Khosa.

“A total of 3,100 judges handled 3.6 million cases in a year and disposed of criminal cases that had been pending for 25 years despite limited available resources.”

The chief justice welcomed PM Imran’s offer to provide extra resources to the judiciary and said such measures would go a long way in improving matters

Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa on Wednesday responded to recent remarks by Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding the judiciary, saying it was the government that allowed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to travel abroad for medical treatment.

“Do not taunt us regarding the powerful,” the chief justice said, adding that everyone is equal before the law. He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a mobile app, call centre, complete video link facility in five courtrooms of the Supreme Court, research centre and an enhanced website to facilitate litigants and lawyers.

He said the permission to go abroad was granted to Nawaz by the prime minister and the Lahore High Court (LHC) had only set the modalities.

While speaking at a ceremony in Havelian on Monday, Prime Minister Imran had asked Chief Justice Khosa and puisne judge of the Supreme Court Justice Gulzar Ahmed to come forward and restore public confidence in the judiciary.

In his address, the premier had also said that speedy and quick justice for all would lay the foundation of the country’s new system based on the principles of ‘Riasat-i-Madina’. He said there was a perceived disparity in how the powerful and common people were treated in the country’s judicial system. He said he was ready to support the judiciary to change the perception and restore public confidence in the institutions.

"Do you not remember that we convicted a prime minister (Nawaz Sharif) and disqualified another prime minister (Yousuf Raza Gilani)?" Chief Justice Khosa said, and while raising both his fists in a similar fashion as done by former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf on May 12, 2007, added: "The case concerning a chief of army staff is going to be decided soon."

This will be Justice Khosa's legacy, even though he has a lot of other things to be proud of. SC is hearing current year criminal appeals, thanks to his special bench.

So the blame game has started.

This is for my gullible Paks;
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Goldfish.... shall keep on swimming in air... memory zero.

Looks like everyone is hitting the wall...

Nizam has reached a fork in the road!
Well , it is fact Judges ignored many facts in Nawaz recent case. But, Imran Khan can't fly solo, old bird around him clip his wings and it will happen time after time.
Anyway, judiciary is very much independent compare where our country is situated and in the past. I mean top. Not high courts.

Even if Gov allowed that, he has the option to take notice and call all the parties. He should’ve asked the gov how can they allow a convicted person to leave.

But NO,NO, why would he.

They are just playing the blame game now.

For me, IK lost all the respect for struggle he did for 23 years. The struggle was for justice, justice for everyone. 1 law for everyone.
