Governor of Jakarta a Chinese Indonesian

I'm sorry, the original text says "Uphold the language of unity, Bahasa Indonesia" not one language. My mistake.

However, that doesn't mean Indonesians can only allowed to speak in Bahasa Indonesia. The use of Bahasa Indonesia is mandatory only in formal situation. In education, national media, and such. Bahasa Indonesia is the highest of language in Indonesia.

In case you don't know, most Indonesian are billingual or triliungual which is Bahasa Indonesia - ethnic language - foreign language.

A recent statistic shows this :

Find out how your country stacks up in our language report

I am myself is a trilingual person. :)

Yup I am four lingual I guest : Minang, Indonesian language, English, and Betawi (Indonesian slank/ local Jakarta language) :D

@powastick

your problem with your Malaysian government should not be related with our Chinese ethnic. In 1965 it is politically motivated mass killing, it is more like civil war like in Syria based on ideology, its more like Javanese vs Javanese ( even though there are other ethnic taking part based on what I read) and the killing is concentrated in East Java where two groups have strong follower.

No Chinese killed in 1998 as well, based on the recorded fact it is Native Indonesian who are killed at that time. Around 100 people because of being trapped of burning building. But I do agree that Jakarta were burned at that time after our university students get shoot, people just get angry and the situation also helped to make Soeharto lost his power.

But I do agree there is anti ethnic China sentiment at that time, but it is felt like that because of ethnic Chinese always being seen as a Soeharto supporter group.

Of course they would be treated like any other Japanese Citizen. Provided they don't perform acts against the state, which would be considered as treason.
Okay I give example, a "hypothetical" Japan war on Diao Yu Tai with China. Japan lost 10,000 men and worst of all lost the island. We are talking about 10,000 who have families waiting for them at home. The local Japanese who lost their fathers and brothers will seek revenge. Don't you think the Japanese Chinese would be the first target? If I'm a Japanese Chinese, I would be worried.

I'm talking about why the Chinese government is sitting back and allowing Burma to attack the Kokang.

Because being ethnic Chinese is not the same as being a Chinese national.

We have no legal responsibilities to help ethnic Chinese such as the Kokang. Unless they renounce their current citizenship and apply for Chinese citizenship instead.

Until then they are Burmese, and the internal affairs of Burma.

It doesn't mean PRC should attack and annex every countries where the Chinese people live. And the relation between Chinese descendants and PRC are not necessarily political. But still the PRC Government doesn't abandon Kokang. They help the Kokang Refuges and give them a place to stay inside China. At least until the civil war end. That's means, PRC are not abandoning them and still consider them as Chinese.

Chinese is the name of ethnic, so every Chinese Ethnic should be called as Chinese. But they are not necessarily a PRC Citizen. The relation between the two are not necessarily political. But more of cultural and the sense of origin

To be honest, I'm of a mix ethnic, both my parents are from different ethnic each with a distinct language. My grandmother from my father side was from another ethnic which also with a different language. And I can understand and speak all of them to some degree.

So counting them all along with BI and English, I'm a five lingual person hahaha :D

Yah I will try to learn Arab later to match your language skills there...... 8-)

Lux always bring controversial thing here.

Well, actually Palembang people, Bangka people , Dayak people of Indonesia are all Chinese in the past but they dont consider themselves as Chinese ethnic anymore now, and we always consider them Native. There are many Arabs as well in Indonesia, but they consider themselves as Indonesian first. The problems are only happen in the first and second generation.

Every country has its version of history. Some history are distorted for sake of country. Don't you start to doubt when they quote no death?

Sorry there are death of Chinese at 1965 after I started googling, but the overall killing happening in 1965 was about 1 million ( in which I doubt that) that mostly happen between native ethnic. It was like civil war, just like in China before. So, please dont try to give the audience here some kind of sense that 1965 killing is about anti-ethnic Chinese tragedy in Indonesia. Based on some story, there are about 100-200 Chinese ethnic killing, but the killing itself should be more motivated by ideology than ethnic tension. That kind of number are also so minor compared with 1 million killing during 1965.

Actually, if my memory is right, Somebody mentioned that the Indonesian's ancestor came from Yunnan, China, long time ago.

Most Peranakan do not marry Malays, get your facts straight. They do not speak Mandarin but mostly Hokkien+Malay language. Most of them already lost their wealth by the end colonial period. Most Peranakan are Ming dynasty immigrants. They are a product of culturally assimilated not mix marriage. There are no advantage being a Peranakan

I know one Malaysian Peranakan, his great grandmother was a bullock cart tycoon until some mainland chinese(son-in-law) cheated her money. On her death bed, the son-in-law return her jewelry. She threw it away, ask to return her properties and land to her. If being ruthlessness is part of being chinese, then there is nothing to be proud of.

I think you misunderstood Indonesian Chinese, I went to Indonesia before and talk to them. They are ethnic Chinese I assure you. After 500,000 people mostly Chinese killed in the communist purge and ethnic violence, do you think they still be loyal? Having Indonesian name is not by choice, is by force. Most Indonesian Chinese wanted to leave Indonesia. If they can't leave, they will prepare their children.

Indonesian Chinese prior to 1997 are politically inactive. Means they don't join political parties or champion their cause. After racial riot, they feel that they need representation.

A country is like your father. Indonesia will just be a foster father. Should you betray your foster father? Should you betray your real father? Not easy being an oversea Chinese.
Identity crisis

No,no,no dude, they are not native in Indonesia. Those you mentioned are Chinese.

Do you know what's in my mind about Indonesia and Indonesian people?
Indonesian more or less are too over nationalism, and don't trust outsiders, especially Chinese and Australian.

Do you ever heard about Penguins living in the Antarctica? They are not afraid of outsiders, they have not hostility against outsiders. Why? Because outsiders didn't kill or damage them. Human being are the same, if one country is rarely invaded, the people in such countries are more peaceful and kind.

Before 18th century, Indonesia local people and Chinese live together peacefully. You know, Chinese at that time didn't go there to kill or govern your guys, they moved there to do business or develop farmland or teach handicraft such as textile. The West and Japanese colony history almost changed all ASEAN people's attitude, you guys need to find out the reasons in deep soul and solve the problem. Get confidences again and trust outsiders, especially those who didn't hurt you in the past.

No way, impossible. Peranakan still kept a lot of ancient Tang, Song or Ming dynasty's culture, dialects, tradition and religion.
