What's new

Governor of Jakarta a Chinese Indonesian

Jakarta Governor, Basuki Cahaya Purnama a.k.a Ahok is Indonesian - Chinese NOT Chinese - Indonesian.

Indonesian - Chinese (Tionghoa) is considered as an integral part of Indonesia nation equals to the Javanese, Makassarese, Minang, Banjar, Sunda, Maluku, etc. The Indonesian - Chinese along with other Indonesians had vowed to have only ONE MOTHERLAND, ONE NATION, UPHOLD LANGUAGE OF UNITY- INDONESIA. See : Indonesia Youth Pledge

Even the place where the vow was made was belong to an Indonesian-Chinese, Sie Kong Liong.

The ones that still confusing where they belong are not Indonesian-Chinese.

Back to Ahok.. Lux, the so called Islamic hardliners against Ahok are insignificant in number. Every country, every group has its own hardliners and extremist, Indonesia is no exception. What's important to note is that those hardliners do not represent what Indonesian Muslims are in general.
Read the 10th paragraph of your own OP. who asked Ahok to be their leader in the first place?

Though a non muslim, Ahok has a special relation with muslim. He has a foster Muslim family from Bone, South Sulawesi. Ahok's father and a Muslim, Andi Baso Amir made an oath to be brother in life and afterlife, and to treat each others' children like their own. Acording to Ahok himself, his Muslim family helped finance his college education.
Ahok's foster father was a younger brother of Indonesia's patriot and great general M. Jusuf who also one of Ahok's role model.

Ahok with his foster brother and sister to his left made a speech in front of his foster mother's tomb. You can see Islamic clerics close to his right listening.

A country is like your father. Indonesia will just be a foster father. Should you betray your foster father? Should you betray your real father? Not easy being an oversea Chinese.

Being loyal to everyone, means being loyal to no one.

China doesn't recognize dual nationality. If you're a Chinese national you have to be loyal to China above any other country.

Gary Locke and Gordon Chang are 100% loyal to America, they self-identify as Americans, and they are American citizens. They are not Chinese, they are Americans. At most you can call them "ethnic Chinese", which is a problem because they are very anti-China.

"Ethnic Chinese".

But they don't have Chinese nationality, and they are loyal to another country.

If they don't have Chinese nationality, and they are not loyal to China, how can they be Chinese?

Ask Gary Locke and Gordon Chang who they will fight for, they will fight for the USA to hurt China. Without blinking an eye.

They won't even call themselves Chinese either. They say they are Americans.

Chinese Nationality? You mean PRC nationality? Lux is right, A Hok is a Chinese, as Chinese is the name of an ethic. While the People Republic of China is a country. The Uighur people are Turk, but they are PRC Citizen.

Lux de Veritas is the most anti-China member on this forum.

So if he is Chinese, he is a traitor.

But luckily he is not, he is a Singaporean foreigner.

One nation is possible. One Motherland and One language are impossible. Chinese will forever speak Chinese, especially they are Han. And I advise Indonesian govt to recover their family name. Those Indonesian family name is weird for a Chinese.

So the "ethnic Chinese" members here without PRC citizenship are not real Chinese according to your definition?

I agree, however things go sour, our head will be under the chopping board. Leaving as in leave to other nation such as Australia, US, and Britain for example.

Loyal to China or not is not important; With or without PRC citizenship is not important. But definitely they are Chinese, especially they are Han, having same origin and ancestors with us.

They have their Chinese name. Just difficult to find Chinese language teachers.

I don't hold any grudges against Chinese who "choose to become" Americans, British, Canadian, etc. That is their choice.

And of course they should be loyal to the country of their citizenship.

But if they want the protection of the Chinese government, they must apply for Chinese citizenship, and give up their other citizenship. Otherwise they are not legally Chinese, they will have to go to the American/British/Canadian embassy if they are in trouble, since that is their identity now.

They are "ethnic Chinese", which is not the same as being a Chinese national.

Ethnic Chinese can be Americans, Canadians, Malaysians, Singaporeans, etc.

Oh OK, so @Lux de Veritas is still considered as an ethnic Chinese, from Singapore.

I'm talking about why the Chinese government is sitting back and allowing Burma to attack the Kokang.

Because being ethnic Chinese is not the same as being a Chinese national.

We have no legal responsibilities to help ethnic Chinese such as the Kokang. Unless they renounce their current citizenship and apply for Chinese citizenship instead.

Until then they are Burmese, and the internal affairs of Burma.
