Jakarta Governor, Basuki Cahaya Purnama a.k.a Ahok is Indonesian - Chinese NOT Chinese - Indonesian.
Indonesian - Chinese (Tionghoa) is considered as an integral part of Indonesia nation equals to the Javanese, Makassarese, Minang, Banjar, Sunda, Maluku, etc. The Indonesian - Chinese along with other Indonesians had vowed to have only ONE MOTHERLAND, ONE NATION, UPHOLD LANGUAGE OF UNITY- INDONESIA. See : Indonesia Youth Pledge
Even the place where the vow was made was belong to an Indonesian-Chinese, Sie Kong Liong.
The ones that still confusing where they belong are not Indonesian-Chinese.
Back to Ahok.. Lux, the so called Islamic hardliners against Ahok are insignificant in number. Every country, every group has its own hardliners and extremist, Indonesia is no exception. What's important to note is that those hardliners do not represent what Indonesian Muslims are in general.
Read the 10th paragraph of your own OP. who asked Ahok to be their leader in the first place?
Though a non muslim, Ahok has a special relation with muslim. He has a foster Muslim family from Bone, South Sulawesi. Ahok's father and a Muslim, Andi Baso Amir made an oath to be brother in life and afterlife, and to treat each others' children like their own. Acording to Ahok himself, his Muslim family helped finance his college education.
Ahok's foster father was a younger brother of Indonesia's patriot and great general M. Jusuf who also one of Ahok's role model.

Ahok: Kuliah saya dibiayai orang Bugis - Ahok: My college education was funded by my Bugis family
Ahok (far right) and his foster Muslim sister (sitting in front with Ahok's mother) in a family reunion in 2011.
Ahok at his foster mother's funeral in October 2014. He carried the bier, something a non Muslim isn't normally allowed unless he is regarded as family.
Ahok with his foster brother and sister to his left made a speech in front of his foster mother's tomb. You can see Islamic clerics close to his right listening.
