What's new

Governor of Jakarta a Chinese Indonesian

No way, impossible. Peranakan still kept a lot of ancient Tang, Song or Ming dynasty's culture, dialects, tradition and religion.

I will give you a secret now, before Dutch came, Chinese immigrant embrace Islam, so they become mix with the native ones. They prefer their Muslim fellow ( Malay) than their ethnic origin. In Islam, regardless ethnicity, we are regarded as brothers and sisters.

When Dutch came, they prefer ethnic Chinese than locals in business, and they suppress the native ones since native people has political power and Dutch was worried that empowering locals economically will create independence struggle. This is the time where the hate comes. They also dont embrace Islam and become Christian to get privilage from Dutch. Dutch then tried to weaken us (native) in business thats why ethnic Chinese businesses were flourishing since that time. The first national attempt to get independence comes form Indonesian Native Entrepreneur under SDI (Serikat Dagang Islam), later emerges as SI (Serikat Islam) that helps to unleash Soekarno into a political scene.

Soeharto came, and he also supported ethnic Chinese here since many Muslim entrepreneur are Masyumi ( Islamist Party). Just like Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is supported by Muslim entrepreneurs as well as in Turkey (Erdogan Party). Soeharto become anti-Islamist person in his first power until 1990 and suppress his political opponents.

Salim Group is just no body without Soeharto family backing for example. If locals have economic power, they tend to enter politics and challenge him. As now we have seen that almost all big conglomerates of native Indonesian are all politicians, maybe starting from Sudarpo who owns Samudera Indonesia shipping line (world class container ship company), and now Kalla Family, Bakrie Family, Chaerul Tanjung (CT Corps) etc.

Our Past Conglomerate is there by designed, it was formulated by Chicago Phd ( the way we call Indonesian Chicago graduate who use tricle down effect theory as a basis to grow conglomerate, just like in South Korea (Chaebol), but Soerharto prefers to grow ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs than native ones)

Thats is the reason, more into Dutch and Soeharto policy than anything else.

It's up to Indonesian-Chinese's own decision. Can you understand? If they find the Indonesian language is interesting and useful, they will choose to learn it. If the Indonesian govt treat them well, they would be loyal to the govt. Why must be one language? They can learn both Chinese and Bahasa, why not?
Of course they can learn two or more language at the same time, but all ethnic IN Indonesia must speaking Bahasa Indonesia to they daily live, we have 300+ ethnic living in Indonesia, with no unitary language will be difficult to them to understand each other.

@powastick

No Chinese killed in 1998 as well, based on the recorded fact it is Native Indonesian who are killed at that time

No Chinese killed in 1998!?

So, We are all Indonesian Born Chinese just Dreaming in that time?

Are We Afraid of "Nothing" !?

Do you think, all Indonesian Born Chinese Blind and Dumb?

Do you think, Cause you are Majority. So, You can say Anything you want?

Wake Up, Dude !

No, no there is not such a "must". Indonesian must try to upgrade the values of the Bahasa, increase the interest and attraction of the language, but not force others to learn it.

You should know Chinese hundreds of years ago, didn't go to "Indonesia". Maybe Java, Borneo, etc. Indonesia is a product of Dutch colony.

They burned the business shops, I am agree, even though we shouldn't also underestimate some force within our politics at that time who wants Soeharto to be down and create the chaos situation using their power. I dont want to speculate much since I dont have proof to blame someone. Indeed, there was an ethnic tension at that time, but coming from lower class Indonesian (economically) at Jakarta. 1998 was only happening in Jakarta. No Chinese killed since no police report. If someone family get killed of course they will report to the police, but there was no report and police data. And 1998 was already a modern time, not like in 1965. Independence commission setting up after reformation didnt find any real evidence.

Hmm, you hit my nerve

If it's not for Bahasa Indonesia, there is much of our People who can't speak between each other because of the difference in language and writing norm. The Javanese speak in Java and have Sanskrit like writing style, the Sundanese speak in Sunda and have Sanskrit like writing style too, the Malay speaks in Malays and have Arabian writing style, and so on with hundreds other our ethnic groups.

Indonesia indeed is a historical "leftover" of Dutch Colony if you look at it from another perspective, but if you go through Indonesian History, you can found if Nusantara once had been united by Majapahit empire and you can't deny if Indonesian as country is really struggling to achieve her Independence and we are taking a proud by those fact.

No, if they can't be treated well, they need to set up independent country like Timor, Papua or Singapore.

Hmm then their blood can be spilled over our river and sea if they dare to do that

We're a country with dozens of ethnic spreaded all across the archipelago, main concern is ethnic sentiment like Myanmar, so promoting unitary languange is a step towards unity in this country, not only must, all citizens indlucing chinese, has no problem with Bahasa, oh yeah, you're mainlander. Come here and see Chinese Indonesian, most of them talking bahasa easily.

Dutch? yes we're colony of them, but we're in few step ahead of them now

 Independent like Timor huh? look what have they became now, a failed state

"Bahasa" (Language) might be used by over 90% of our citizens, but the one that actually uses them in day to day conversation are only around 20%!.

You might be confusing the Indonesian language with a "majority" language where in fact its the language of the middle class. The merchant more specifically. That is why the Indonesian language have such penetration to every corner of the archipelago, unlike let's say the Hindi language.
