Pakistani politician got paid £1,000 a month in UK benefits

A prominent Pakistani politician has been receiving British state benefits to which he was not entitled while living in a palatial home in Karachi.

As the governor of Sindh province in Pakistan, Dr Ishrat-Ul-Ebad Khan lives in a mansion in the state capital while being waited on by servants and chauffeured in Mercedes limousines.

Yet, while enjoying the perks of his position, Dr Khan was for 10 months the recipient of money from the benefits system, including income support worth about £1,000 a month.

Taxpayers also funded the £244-a-week rent on a house in north-west London, that Dr Khan keeps as a base for his family in Britain. His wife, Shaheena, also received benefits because she had been diagnosed with a "stress disorder". Extra money was added to allow for Dr Khan, who did not have a job, as her full-time carer.

Last night Andrew Dismore, the Labour MP whose Hendon constituency includes the house rented by the Khans, called on ministers to launch an immediate inquiry. Mr Dismore, a former member of the Commons Work and Pensions select committee, said: "I would be very surprised if the rules allowed this."

Danny Alexander, Liberal Democrat spokesman on work and pensions, said: "A system that allows mistakes such as this to occur is clearly not working." When confronted by The Sunday Telegraph, Dr Khan, who has four children, admitted receiving benefits to which he was not entitled since taking up his position as governor three years ago but insisted that he had paid back the money. There has been no further claim since October 2003.

Dr Khan, who trained at Sindh Medical College in Karachi, came to Britain in 1992 as an asylum seeker. Following the acceptance of his asylum claim in 1999, Dr Khan was entitled to a range of British benefits. He and his family have been living in a pebble-dashed semi-detached corner house in Edgware, a north London suburb since 1997. In May 1999, they began claiming income support, which also entitled him to other payments, such as housing benefit.

Dr Khan said that he had repaid a matter of "a few hundred pounds" but he was keen to make sure any money that might still be outstanding was reimbursed. "If anything has been done, even inadvertently, I would very much like to rectify it. But in our opinion we have not tried to misguide or mislead.

Burning for what? What you are saying doesn't make any sense. A Governor can NOT do the things you are claiming, he has no authority to do sh!t.. Now if you want to still live in your delusional world, then plz carry on..

no I believe him! I think governor can do a lot!!! infact he can do everything! HOWEVER, what I fail to understand how can he not control crime in Karachi? or floods every year in Sindh?

& how can a party claim to be NOT IN GOVERNMENT and yet keep its governor in place?

confusing contradictions

yes governor believe it or not has some authorties, he can okay bills for new universities for instance, he is part of the government so he always influence the government for projects such as KCR, he can call meetings, he can even spend few money from his governor fund, he can use that money to initiate some development projects and he doesnt get to deal with key issues like security, law and order etc

Sindh Governor calls for winning trust of foreign investors

KARACHI - Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan has called upon the private sector to come forward and subscribe in the efforts the government is making to meet with the economic challenges confronting the country and help strengthen the country's economic sector.

Talking to a delegation of UK-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UKPCCI) led by its president Razi Khan here on Saturday at the Governor's House, he said investors from Pakistan and the multinational companies should have to invest in the country to win trust of foreign investors who are in search of good opportunities which "we could provide by regaining their trust", he maintained.

The Governor told the visitors that 50% of the labour force in the country earn less than $2 per day and is living below poverty line thereby posing a great challenge to the government as it could provide only limited number of jobs through its resources. Therefore private sector has to come forward to help it in meeting this challenge by setting up industries and generating business activities.
He noted that an exhibition is continuing at present at the Karachi Expo centre which would help introduce Pakistani products in international markets.

He further informed that thanks to its geographic location Pakistan enjoys a unique status in the region with a trade corridor linking the Central Asian and Middle East nations. This facility could be fully exploited being cost effective comparing to that of other countries of the region while the government policies are also lucrative for the foreign entrepreneur.
Others present in the delegation were Chairman FPCCI Zubair Malik, Senator Haseeb Khan, Chairman KATI Zubair Chhaya, Shoaib Gul, Abdul Majid Shaheen, Faz Zia, Tehsin Aslam and Dr Zia.
