The government today refused to share information with the Parliament about KALI 5000 project citing it to be a matter of national security.

"The desired information is sensitive in nature and its disclosure is not in the interest of national security,
" Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

The question asked was whether there is any proposal to induct KALI 5000 in the armed forces.

According to publicly available information, KALI (Kilo Ampere Linear Injector) is a linear electron accelerator being developed in India, by Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

It is designed to work in such a way that if a missile is launched in India's direction, it will quickly emit powerful pulses of Relativistic Electrons Beams (REB).

Unlike laser beams, it does not create a hole in the target but damages the on-board electronic systems.

KALI project was first initiated by the then BARC Director Dr R Chidambaram in 1985 and work on the project began in 1989.

The government also refused to share much information on safety steps being taken by India for protection of space assets.

KALI: India's weapon to destroy any uninvited missiles and aircrafts

India has designed a top secret weapon, KALI, which will be an answer to any uninvited missile aimed to disturb the peace of India. KALI stands for Kilo Ampere Linear Injector. The weapon is designed so that it can be used to destroy missiles and aircrafts through soft-kill.

It has been developed by the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). The project was initially started for industrial purposes but its various abilities helped in making it a powerful weapon.

Facts you should definitely know about the weapon:

  • The Kali project was first initiated by the then Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Dr. R. Chidambaram in the year 1985
  • Work on the project began in 1989
  • The project was initially developed for industrial applications. Its use as a defence weapon was later suggested by the designers of the project
  • The KALI series which are KALI 80, KALI 200, KALI 1000, KALI 5000 and KALI 10000 are described as 'Single Shot Pulsed Gigawatt Electron Accelerators'
  • The single shot devices use water filled capacitors to build the charge energy
  • It has been reported that the project's potential as a defence weapon has made it a threat for China
  • The beams from the weapon can shatter any satellite and UAVs in no time
  • Its ability to emit powerful pulses of electrons and the conversion of electron energy into E.M. Radiation fuelled the hopes that the KALI could be used in a High-Power Microwave gun
  • The X-Rays emitted by it are being used as an illuminator for ultrahigh speed photography
  • Electronic components currently used in project can withstand fields of approximately 300 volt per centimetre
  • The Relativistic Electron Beams (REB) can be used for the generation of High Power Microwaves (HPM) & Flash X Rays (FXR).

Kali is not a weapon, rather an experimental device. However the high frequency radiation could increase the temperature to distroy the electronics of the Missile. In a same way why developing SAM, when the high frequency sound could be created around the Pilot cockpit, as a weapon which create havoc to the Pilot's mind.

So, Something starts cooking here

Arey Bhaya; if there is some Microwave device......... then you can certainly start cooking something..... nah!
Like "frying up" the adversary's Comms and Sensors....... :D

One has to wonder what the motives were behind asking such a direct question on such a specific classified program in the first place and who did so.

Sometimes such questions have "hidden" agendas and intentions......:D
Information and disinformation are two sides of the same coin. :)

Exactly, and this is why I have posed the question. In the past we have seen persons with dubious intentions try to use the RTI act to gain sensitive/classified information and apparently they are trying to get to such information through the parliamentry questions route also. I'm sure the IB is looking into this.

If I were you, I'd not worry too much about this...... ;)

I'm not worrying sir because I know the propoer authorites are already on to this matter but it is still worth highlighting on a public forum and worth discussing in my opinion. Someone asking the MoD to disclose the status of their classified projects is very curious to say the least.

Bollywood is also in India I presume.
