Government aimed to bring 60 million children back to schools to get 100% enrolment: Education Minister

ISLAMABAD: Government has the target to bring 60 million children to school, who have been left out and prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century; It is the first priority of the government to have 100 percents enrollment at primary level by the year 2015.
This was stated by the Minister of State for Education, Ms. Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli while addressing the certificate distribution ceremony of Children's Resources International Pakistan's Family Literacy program here on Saturday.

Also present at the occasion were UN Resident Coordinator for Pakistan, Mr. Jan Vandemoortele, Additional Secretary Ministry of Education Mr. Shahid Ahmed, Director Education USAID Pakistan, Dr. Randt Hatfield, Director Trainings and Colleges Federal Directorate of Education, Professor Muhammad Rafiq Tahir, and Chief Children's Resources International Pakistan, Ms. Mehnaz Aziz. Some 500 learners and trainers from CRI partner's schools of Islamabad were also present to receive certificates.

Ms. Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli said that initiatives such as Family Literacy program of Children's Resources International could help government achieve its target to bring literacy rate to 86%by 2015.

She added, ?The problem of education is so immense that it cannot be handed by the government alone, we need private sectors investments as well?. She appreciated CRI's effort for shouldering the burden of government for the eradication of illiteracy form Pakistan.

She applauded the efforts of all the learners especially mothers and congratulated them for successfully completing their family literacy session and appreciated the interactive teaching and learning methodology brought in by CRI that changed the teaching system of Pakistan.

Highlighting the reforms undertaken by the Ministry recently for improvement of education, the minister said that curriculum has been revised, 11 subjects have been changed with consents of all the provinces and have been approved by the Ministry of Education.

?We have also introduced new schemes of studies in which our focus wi9ll be on providing up to date knowledge to our student, extra curricular activities, art and craft and sports to make children develop thinking.

Government is also providing special allowances and incentives like cash, cooking oil, and milk to encourage female participation in education in far flung areas.

Earlier Mr. Jan Vandemoortele said ?I am an Economist by profession and see that for development we need to invest in building factories but today in this ceremony, I have realized that for development of any country, education and high literacy rate are important.

He appreciated all the mothers and termed them as real change agents. He added United Nation will extend all possible support for initiatives such as CRI's program that facilitate the change in development.

Chief Executive Children's Resources International, Ms. Mehnaz Aziz in her welcome address highlighted the uniqueness of the family Literacy Program saying that it is the only program that gives the opportunity to children and parents to learn simultaneously and support one another leading to more literate house holds.

Though public private partnership she said we are addressing ESR objectives by improving the quality of teaching and learning, change in physical and emotional classroom environment, providing new motivation for teachers, inviting parents to participate in the education of their children and training an indigenous team who can carry for the implementation in future Director Trainings and Colleges FDE Professor Mohammad Rafique Tahir and Director Education Office USAID Dr. Randy Hatfield also addressed the participants and appreciated the efforts of CRI Pakistan in supporting the government to achieve Millennium Development Goals.

This certificate ceremony was the last in the series of three organized to give away certificates to more than 1300 learners parents of eighty one partner schools in Rawalpindi and Islamabad District who attended September April 6, 2007 literacy session.

The parents also displayed their work produced during the literacy session.
