Good Old Indian Jugaad Makes Viraat Ageless, Could Keep Going For 10 More Years

.
hey my frndz when it will be use less give it to us we will break it at our GADANI Beach (a ship Breaker's Beach)

oooohhhooo u can give us right now coz its almost useless

when ever the tension create btw india and pakistan the indian nevy alwys try to save that from PAKISTAN's Sub

sorry my friend we r not the US to give everything to u for free.

pay us some amount say a billion dollars,we ll transfer it right away.

.
He's probably talking about the Harriers which presently operate from the deck of INS Viraat. Harriers would eventually be replaced by MiG-29Ks and Naval Tejas. However those aircraft would be assigned to the newer aircraft carriers which IN hopes to induct and field in the near future.

Nope -- In all probability he is referring to crash rate of IN Harriers. I believer there are only 6-8 left of them. Harrier is a notorious aircraft to fly and even more so if they are old. In 10 years you can expect the Harrier numbers to dwindle to the point of there being 'no aircraft' on viraat's deck !!!

Useless ? Really ?

You thought the same thing about a sister ship called Vikrant in 71. However Chittagong and cox's kings bazaar residents would beg to differ.

Please dont troll...if you dont have anything to add.

But it is about time the warhorse retires. Great to see this machine protect our nation for so long. Now it is time it hands over its reins to younger, bigger, stronger and more capable Vikramaditya, Vikrant II and Vishaal (?).

Indian Juggad is the worst thing that could happen to India !!!

Why worst ? Because politicians count on this very JUGGAD from military to help nation out in difficult times instead of taking appropriate actions at appropriate time !

. .
it will still carry.....

Westland Sea King Mk.42
HAL Chetak
HAL Dhruv

2 x 40mm Bofors AA guns

16 x Barak SAM VL cells

80+ torpedoes

750 troops ...... So

despite its age and range considerations, INS Viraat can effectively project naval and air power anywhere in the South Asia region.

New style of asking for a aid ? you guys are ingenious !! :)

why not we use this old lady as Helicopter carrier.

I think thats what it is today
Currently Viraat operates a fleet of 14 Helicopters including Ka28 AEW ,Sea king ASW , Chetak utility helicopters

While the fleet of Harriers has fallen to 11 Aircrafts
If u look at its armaments ,its quite modern
2 x 40mm Bofors AA guns

16 x Barak SAM VL cells

80+ torpedoes
What i meant was that thanks to constant Upgrade , the only think that is old in this carrier is the steel , rest have been upgraded to current levels
Viraat will mainly serve as an anphibous warfare ship for the next 5-10 yrs and i hope that indian navy retires it by 2015 , when Vikramaditya And Vikrant enter service:D:D:chilli:

why not we use this old lady as Helicopter carrier.

It would be very hard to define Viraat in a heli carrier role. It is an idea of bygone era. Most of the modern heli carriers double up as amphibious assault ships - example Mistral class. Viraat cannot be used in this role. Further by the time we find X no of heli's to station on Viraat's back -- 10 year counter might be near.

Good Old Indian Jugaad Makes Viraat Ageless, Could Keep Going For 10 More Years

"There used to be a time when we got hot water and cold food on board. That's been sorted out now," said an Indian Navy aviator today, fondly, of his time on INS Viraat, India's sole aircraft carrier, and one that continues to baffle her makers with her incredible, perplexing longevity. Today, it was revealed by a senior Indian Navy officer that the 28,000-ton carrier, which was transferred to India in 1987 for what was expected to be, in effect, a seven-year operational swansong, can actually stay operational for another ten years or more -- till 2020 if necessary. "She can go for another 5-10 years. The remarkable thing about Viraat is that there are no foreseeable limits to her endurance," the officer said. Last year, she turned 50 following a life extension programme at the Cochin Shipyard (see photo) -- made necessary by the monumental Gorshkov delays. This is a warship, it appears, that simply gets better with age. Literally.

The officer -- he played a key role in overseeing the life extension programme -- added, "We are known for our jugaad. But it wasn't just that. India has achieved a remarkable piece of engineering here, conducted entirely by an Indian firm with Indian knowhow. I can tell you Viraat is truly in great shape. We had to cut the ship open to replace her condensers. It was a true feat."

Under the life-extension programme, the Viraat underwent a great deal of steel work, received a new radar, new ESM gear, new habitations, new messes and galleys that have made it supremely more comfortable." I spent two separate nights on board Viraat in 2006 and 2007 out in the Arabian Sea -- she truly is a beaut. Ironically, chances are if she's pushed for another ten years, it's very likely Viraat won't have any aircraft to fly off its deck.

It feels infact excelent to hear all this.According to the indian navy official this ship is actually getting better n better with every next fit n extention.
Perhaps by now during its All four Mid-service Refits its every nut & bolt is being replaced so as its weapons, engine and hull is refurbished, and its electronics upgraded while providing an excelent knowhow about the AC's build an maintanance.
Every adavnced single sensors an systems r incoporated to acclamatise to the present scenarios n situations.Perhaps fruitless to say decomisioning of this Fortress.Rather its a big added punch besides ViKramaditya and IAC's.
