What's new

God’s chosen rogues

Yes, I know... but the rest of the world doesn't watch Indian media nor does it watch any other neutral source (with an exception of Al Jazeera, but that's not as popular as BBC or CNN).

No worries,we are working on that too, slowly, but steadily indeed.

It seems,South Asia is going to be the priority for the moment.

Have a look at the reports::

Reliance-CBS announce new TV channels for India, S.Asia

MUMBAI (AFP) - Indian tycoon Anil Ambani's Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd and CBS Studios International announced plans Wednesday to launch three new television channels in India and South Asia.

The English-language channels, dedicated to general entertainment, youth and women, are due to go live in October and will be available in India as well as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The companies declined to give specific financial details of the tie-up, but said each would have a 50 percent stake in the joint venture, designed to tap into India's fast-growing television market.

International media and entertainment firms including Time Warner, Disney, News Corp., Sony and Viacom have been expanding their presence in India in recent years, with customised programmes for niche urban audiences.

Tarun Katial, chief executive of Reliance Broadcast Network, described the deal -- the company's first foray into television broadcasting -- as a "landmark moment".

"We see great opportunity in the Indian television industry which projects a high growth rate," Katial said in a joint statement issued in Mumbai.

Armando Nunez, president of CBS Studios International, added that the venture was an "exciting alliance with potential for amazing synergies and new opportunities in one of the world's most dynamic business and media markets".

Reliance Broadcast Network is part of the giant Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, which has interests in radio, marketing, advertising, mobile and Internet sectors.

CBS Studios International is part of the CBS Corporation and supplies content around the world from CBS television and film units.

Programmes for these channels will be tailored to match the tastes and sensibilities of increasingly wealthy urban Indians, where special-interest subjects like lifestyle, travel, health and electronics are much in demand.

The new BIG CBS Prime is being billed as a "premium English general entertainment channel". BIG CBS Spark will cater to the youth market and BIG CBS Love for women. Both are being claimed as firsts for the market.

The firms said their joint venture could in future include the launch of Hindi and other regional language channels.

Television is the largest sector of India's media and entertainment world, and was worth 257 billion rupees (5.5 billion dollars) in 2009 with nearly 500 million viewers, according to an industry report by auditors KPMG.

"There is space for specialised channels in India but content will be critical," said Aashish Upganlawar, media analyst at brokerage firm Spark Capital, told AFP from the southern city of Chennai.

CBS content highlighted in the joint venture announcement includes the popular police drama "Hawaii Five-0", which first aired in the late 1960s but has recently been remade, plus crime shows such as "NCIS" and "CSI".

"America's Next Top Model" and "Entertainment Tonight", which are already available on some Indian channels, will also be included, the companies' statement said.

Analysts predict that the Indian television industry will grow by 15.2 percent by 2014 to 521 billion rupees.
India is poised to become the world's largest DTH (direct-to-home) satellite pay TV market by 2012, overtaking the United States, with a projected 35 million subscribers, the companies said in the statement.

This is marketing via proxy.....works the same way,in which Indian motor company sells its products in Pakistan without really having its own base there..........

Good, but the subcontinent (aside from Pakistan which I will explain later) don't have a take on the Israel-Palestine issue. Also, your article tells me that this CBS channel is an entertainment channel- not a news one.

News channels make all the difference. They have a very strong control over people's mindsets- while terrorist attacks were the act of a few individuals, almost all Muslims have been heavily stereotyped and are only shown hostility in the west (and because of this our image of the west isn't improving either). I don't want to turn into politics here and explain what type of generalization I am talking about and the intent of America through their generalization.

Anyhow the Israel-Palestine issue is one between Muslims (Pakistan included) and the West (not just America). As far as I know, you could say that even, for example, Russian media will be neutral- countries outside the 'west' and 'muslim countries' care little for the actual political aspects of the Israel-Palestine conflict because it simply does not affect them (including India- naturally they will be neutral).

Thanks for keeping this a civilized debate .

As I have mentioned before, this is just a start. When STAR launched its network in India, they came up with an entertainment channel to begin with, not the STAR News in the first go.You need to understand, that these media companies are primarily there to make business. So,they start somewhere and changes follow.

Times are changing, and with the changing times we need to change ourselves. We need something that unites all of South Asia.Media is the strongest tool for unification

Regarding the take on middle east and Israel issue,India does severely condemn the military actions and the same mindset is reflected by the Indian media. We can see the same happening very soon with the growth of the media in South Asia.

I would also like to see Pakistani media getting involved in the action. One such example would be the recent tie-up of the Pakistani News services agency Dawn with the India-Today group.

I do understand that Muslims all over the World have been stereotyped and Western media has significantly played a role to put fuel to the hype, but times are changing as our own media grows stronger and stronger day by day.
India, for that matter has a sizable population of Muslims, which is more than that of Pakistan. No wonder, with so much of diversity in the country, the media happens to be impartial and secular. You can count on that......
Thanks for keeping this a civilized debate .

Did you take me as one of those immature war-monger type??Ehhhh!!!!!!

Actually the Israeli 'control' of the media is slipping--and slipping fast. Internet has made a huge difference. I mean, yes, there is probably a large number of Americans who still faithfully believe what Fox News etc propagate but it is not surprising anymore to see anti-Israel programs on mainstream channels like MSNBC.
The best source to see the crimes of Israel are the Israeli sources themselves. Haaretz.com takes the lead in that: From its editorials to the majority of its contributing columnists there is a systematic exposure of Israel's crimes against the Palestinians, Israel's racism against Christians (Bible burnings), Israeli Settlers' violence against neighboring Palestians, Israel's cruelty during the Flotilla attacks, Israel's murderous attacks against Gaza in late 2008, and white Israelis' discrimination against the native Jews.
The list is long at Haaretz. Some brave Jewish souls have taken upon themselves to clean up the image of their religion. Bravo to them.

So...We of Pakistani and international origin in this Forum must never feel hesitant to expose the criminal political and Settler elements of Israeli society. We have many allies in Jews from both Israel and outside of Israel. I truly believe we are on the right side of the history. Some day, in distant future, our comments here will be hailed while the hate mongers will be reviled.
