Goa Shipyard set to build five new OPVs for Indian Coast Guard

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is set to build five more Batch II Sankalp-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), having received approval from India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). IHS Jane's understands that negotiations for this INR20 billion (USD300 million) OPV contract were completed by the end of August.

The vessels will be a follow-on to the six 105 m Batch II Sankalp-class OPVs that the shipyard is already building for the ICG under a January 2012 contract valued at INR18 billion. The new vessels are understood to have similar specifications to the original Batch II ships, which have a 13.6 m beam, a draught of about 3.7 m, displace 2,450 tonnes at full load, and have a top speed of 25 kt generated by two 9,100 kW-rated diesels. It is not known, however, if the power plant for the new OPVs will be the MTU 20V 8000 M71L installed in the earlier Batch II ships or a similarly rated diesel from competitor MAN.

According to GSL, construction work is scheduled to begin imminently. The company is aiming to deliver these ships over a shorter build period of about 36 months. It plans to do so by streamlining procurement and contracting processes. It is also seeking to progressively increase the level of outsourcing of some activities, like hull block fabrication and cabling installation, to smaller shipyards and private companies; it is aiming to increase outsourcing from the current level of 45% to 60% over the next five years and eventually to 70% over the next 10 years.

GSL already has a very full orderbook, which comprises two 105 m Sayurala-class OPVs for the Sri Lankan Navy, four of the original six Batch II Sankalp-class OPVs for the ICG, and two 50 m Victory-class fast attack craft for the Mauritius Police Force National Coast Guard.

There are
1. 7 L&T class OPV under construction.
2. 3 Vishwat ( No 30, 31 and 32 ) class OPV from GSL.
3. 5 Samar class OPV (Samar 42, Sangram 43,Sarang 44, Sagar 45 and Sankalp 46) from GSL.
4. 6 Samarth class OPV under construction/ commissioning from GSL.

Where does this " Sankalp Class " comes from ??

Ok , so no 46 Samar Class is called a separate Sankalp class. But what about the ship called ICGS Samrat listed there ? No pennant number , no pics.

The list doesn't make a mention about Samarth Class , of which 4 are actually being built by GSL....

This has only confused me more.

Is it like the 6 Samarth Class OPV of which 2 have been delivered and 4 more under construction is being called Sankalp Batch 2 of which another 5 will be ordered ?

CG47 is ICGS Samrat may be. I am not confirmed though
