‘There is something rotten in the state of Uttar Pradesh.’, it seems. After a journalist was burned alive in Shahjahanpur a few days back, in another shocking incident a minor girl was set on fire before being brutally assaulted allegedly by her neighbour in Kheshaan village in Fatehpur district. Her crime was just that her father had dared to stop some people from plucking mangoes from his orchard.
Meanwhile, attacks against scribes and whistle-blowers continued in the state with an RTI activist hacked to death by henchmen of a village head in Bahraich.
According to police, the incident took place in Hardi Gaura village where RTI activist Guru Prasad had sought information on some development work initiated by village head. Incensed at this, the village head with some of his supporters barged into his house and attacked him with pickaxes, sticks and some other sharp-edged weapons, police said.
On Saturday, Uttar Pradesh Government has suspended five policemen including inspector Sri Prakash Rai, one of the prime accused of burning Shaharanpur journalist Jagendra Singh alive.
However, shielding the minister for Backward Classes Welfare Ram Murti Verma , who is also accused in the case, UP government said that its minister will not resign from his post despite an First Information Report (FIR) now being lodged against him.
The state government had handed over the probe to DIG, Bareilly range in the alleged killing of the scribe by minister Verma and five others over a Facebook post.
Another journalist was attacked for complaining about gambling dens in Kanpur. Deepak Mishra is currently fighing for his life in a hospital.
‘Plucking Mangoes Got Her Killed’
Meanwhile, in the shocking incident in Fatehpur an FIR against four persons has been lodged with the Ghazipur police on the basis of a complaint given by victim’s parents. The police have arrested two persons in this regard.
The victim’s father Shiv Bhushan Shukla alleged his daughter was burnt alive by his neighbour Ramesh Prasad Shukla.
On Saturday, when Shivbhushan was at the fields and everyone else in the family was away for a wedding, the neighbours allegedly entered his house, thrashed one of his daughters – who was alone at the time – and then set her on fire.
“They entered my house and brutally thrashed my daughter. Then, to make it look like a suicide, they poured kerosene on her and burnt her alive,” said Shivbhushan.
Hearing her cries, villagers rushed to the spot and alerted the local police. “The victim, who suffered serious burns died at the spot,” said the police. The girl’s body was sent for an autopsy at the district hospital, they added.
