SHARM EL-SHEIKH: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani arrived here Saturday on a 4-day visit to Egypt to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Middle East being held in this Egyptian sea-resort from May 18 to 20. Prime Minister Gilani, who has been invited by Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to attend the forum, will address the WEF’s special session “Global Leaders in Spotlight” on Sunday and the Arab Business Council on Monday.

The Prime Minister was received at the airport by Egyptian health minister Hatim al-Jabli and other senior officials, Pakistan’s ambassador-designate to Egypt Seema Naqvi, former Pakistani Ambassador in Cairo Arif Ayub and embassy officials.

On the sidelines of the forum, the prime minister would meet US President George Bush, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and Prime Minister of Palestinian Authority Salam Fayyad.

Pakistan has been a regular participant of WEF activities at the highest level.

The forum will provide an opportunity for interaction with region’s key political and economic leaders and presentation of Pakistan’s perspective on the political and economic issues.

The visit of Gilani, who is on his maiden overseas trip after assuming the office of Prime Minister, will also provide an opportunity to add economic content to the existing bilateral economic and political ties with countries of the region.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by Minister for Environment Hameedullah Jan Afridi, Advisor to Prime Minister on Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Governor State Bank Shamshad Akhtar and Ambassador-at-large Hussain Haqqani.
