GHQ Check-Post Attackers Killed - Hostages Rescued!

Not true Blain.. actually NSG wasnt provided with any layout of the Taj Hotel at mumbai during the 26/11 attack...the 100yr hotel has been through many renovations...NSG had to search each rooms this mamath labyrinth with more than 200 rooms and so was the case at Oberai hotel.
couple of hostages came out from the hiding of thier rooms only in the afternoon of the day, mission completed.

Infact its only now that Mumbai municipal corporation has made mandatory to deposit the layout plan of every major building in the nearest police station.

...Compare that to GHQ ,PA which is the nodal military garrison with its dedicated SF to protect it from exactly the same kind of attack that took place yesterday.

SSG had to do recce of the location at LM. Your troops were provided the general layout at the hotel. Both sides had to do room clearance one by one. At the connected school, there were over 60 rooms.

GHQ is not being compared here because the clearance was done in only one building. As I have said earlier, I am not comparing the GHQ attack with the Mumbai ones.

GHQ has its SSG close protection detachment (for the security of the chief etc.), however the hostage operation was conducted by a team specialized for this role and based elsewhere in Punjab.

Interior minister hints Al-Qaeda role in attack on GHQ

ISLAMABAD (SANA): Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that Al Qaeda involvement on attacking the GHQ cannot be ruled out.
“Tehreek-e-Taliban is an offshoot of the Al Qaeda; Rehman Malik expressed these views in a brief chat a private television channel on Sunday.

Giving details of the assailants who attacked the GHQ, Rehman Malik said that the house raided by the security forces was hired two months ago, adding that the security forces seized devises which could be used in the suicide attacks.

Referring to the delay in a full blown operation against those involved in the GHQ attack, he said that it was delayed under some strategy as the security personnel expected presence of suicide bombers who taken hostage security personnel.

He congratulated security personnel for completion of successful operation to dislodge the well-armed militants.

“There is possibility that Al Qaeda may on the back of the Saturday attack because it carried out such attacks in the past as well. Al-Qaeda was also involved in the suicide attacks on Marriot Hotel and the Holland embassy as well,” he added.

On much-delayed South Waziristan operation, he said that the decision as how to launch the anti-militants offensive there would be taken by the military high-ups.

He went on to say that that the terrorists getting weapons from the neighboring country Afghanistan. He asked the regional powers that the terrorists were their common enemy and should be dealt with sternly.

You mean unit based in Tarbela??

Among those killed in the attack was Brig. Anwar ul-Haq, the director of security for military intelligence. He was shot in the first hour of the siege by one of the gunmen who had penetrated his building, according to relatives of the brigadier who attended his funeral Sunday.

When Brigadier ul-Haq heard shooting, he interrupted a conference he was conducting and went into the corridor with an aide, according to the relatives’ accounts. When he saw a man in military uniform with his back turned to him, the brigadier told him to flee, but instead, the man turned around and shot the brigadier, the relatives said.

He was not the director of security for Military Intelligence, he was the In charge or Security Head for the GHQ. The place which was the scene of this whole drama, is the security building, where the security of GHQ is monitored. Any kind of In & Out movement of GHQ is controlled & authorized from here. Visitors come to this building & after getting a security clearance are sent inside.

But i expect NY Times to write such wrongly fed info, as its their job to do.

In a decisive and fierce commando action, the Special Services Group (SSG) personnel on Sunday morning killed four terrorists and arrested an injured terrorist Aqeel alias Dr Usman, the mastermind of the terrorist assault on Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The SSG commandos also succeeded in recovering 39 hostages from security office near gate 2 of Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi. The security officials told TheNation that during the battle, two SSG commandoes embraced martyrdom while two others were injured. They further informed that three hostages were also martyred while five others (hostages) were maimed due to firing of the terrorists during this rescue operation of SSG commandos.Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Athar Abbas also confirmed the casualties saying that two SSG commandos and three hostages embraced martyrdom while two SSG commandos and five other hostages received injuries. The spokesman of the Pakistan Armed Forces further stated that there were 42 persons including many civilians who were held hostage by the five terrorists armed with lethal weapons and bombs. One terrorist was wearing an explosives’ jacket, he added.According to details, the rescue operation was started at 6:00am which culminated at 8:45am with the release of 39 hostages safely. The SSG commandos including snipers took part in the rescue operation. At the beginning of the operation the snipers gunned down the terrorist, who reportedly was wearing a suicide jacket and was present among the 22 hostages in a room of the security compound outside the GHQ. The snipers’ shot was so sudden that the terrorist could not avail the chance of blowing himself up. To strike back, the terrorists who were inside the security compound opened fire on SSG commandos resulting in two soldiers embracing Shahadat. The terrorists also killed three hostages during gun battle. After this, SSG commandos killed the terrorists and freed the hostages from their custody.Security officials told that in first attempt, Aqeed alias Dr Usman alias Ijaz managed to avoid his arrest but in second attempt SSG commandos succeeded to nab Aqeel alias Dr Usman. They further said that Aqeel, during resistance, received three bullet injuries two in leg and one in the arm. He was shifted to special ward of Military Hospital (MH) amid tightest security. After providing him with necessary medical treatment, Aqeel was shifted to some unknown places for further investigation. Before his arrest, Dr Usman heaped the caches of ammunition including hand grenades, detonators and land mines and set them on fire due to which a big explosion occurred, which also injured him. After that security forces rounded him up.Those hostages who were killed were working as Naib Qasids and sweepers at security compound outside GHQ, security officials added. After the conclusion of operation, bomb disposal squad and forensic experts accompanied with trained sniffer dogs of Pakistan Army screened the whole area to find any land mines, possibly installed by the terrorists, who invaded on GHQ a day before. After an hour long search the whole area was declared clear and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani visited the operation site at security office gate 2 of GHQ

Congratulations to the Pak Army and SSG for achieving a decisive victory over the terrorists at the GHQ. Under the able leadership of Gen. Musharraf, and now his successor Gen Kiyani, Pak Army has racked in an impressive array of victories and conquests in Swat, Bajaur, Khyber, Baluchistan and soon Waziristan. The phenomenal series of victories began with the conquest of the terrorist stronghold of Lal Masjid in Islamabad in 2007. Since that time there is no looking back ……. It is one never ending series of conquests.

The soon to be launched operation in Waziristan will be on an unprecedented scale, that will root out terrorism and extremism in this part of the world; will be a sterling contribution towards the allied forces mission in Afghanistan. The potential victory in Waziristan will be written in the annals of Military history on the same page as Stalingrad, Normandy, Al Alamien, Tarawa, and Midway.

These terrorists mo fkrs need to be killed mercilessly.

But what is disturbing is the fact that they have managed to attack the most powerful power center of Pakistan.

I hope this serves as a wake-up call and pakistani army does not distinguish between Kashmiri terrorists and taliban. This may hurt them in the long term.

Comparisons are futile....I can say that ordinary policemen killed 5 terrorists in less than an hour in the parliament attack on Dec 13, 2001. But such comparisons do not lead us anywhere..

It does not give us happiness to see soldiers dying like these....and we wish that pakistan dismantels the terrorist infrastructure without any differentiation related to their objectives.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility Monday for the weekend siege on army headquarters and vowed to activate militant cells across the country for more attacks as an explosion in a market killed at least 29 people.

Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq called The Associated Press and said the weekend assault on army headquarters, which left 20 people dead, was only the first in a planned wave of strikes intended to avenge the killing of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud in a CIA missile strike in August.

"This was our first small effort and a present to the Pakistani and American governments," he said.

He said the raid on army headquarters was carried out by a Punjabi faction of the militant group and it had given orders to other militant branches in Sindh, Baluchistan and the Northwest Frontier Province to launch similar operations.

The claim that militants in the Punjabi district were responsible for the 22-hour standoff at Pakistan's "Pentagon" was a worrying sign for the government, and showed the guerrillas had spread out from their northwestern base into the heart of the country.

ISLAMABAD: Aqeel alias Dr Osman, the injured terrorist commander captured by security forces from the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Sunday morning, is a member of a Punjab-based militant group with links to Baitullah Mehsud’s Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Sources say Aqeel, who was ostensibly the leader of terrorists who attacked the military headquarters, hails from Kahuta tehsil of Rawalpindi. Muhammad Aqeel, who has also served in the Army Medical Corps, left the army in 2006 and joined Maulana Masood Azhar’s Jaish-e-Muhammad. Later, he joined the Qari Saifullah Group under the command of Ilyas Kashmiri. As Dr Osman, he briefly worked with the Pakistan Army Surgeon General Army Lt Gen Dr Mushtaq, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Rawalpindi, an attack which he was allegedly involved with.

Sources said Aqeel was also the brains behind the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore. He was also involved in planning attacks on former president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Shaukat Aziz.

Earlier, police had arrested another operative of Aqeel’s network in Punjab. Zubair alias Nek Muhammad, who was involved in the March 3 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, had told police what he knew about Aqeel.
