In a reaction to Japan's nuclear disaster triggered by massive earthquake and tsunami, Germany has decided to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022.

Germany's coalition government on Monday agreed to shut permanently its 17 nuclear reactors. The country has already closed seven in March following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that devastated Fukushima.

Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said that six reactors will be shut down by 2021, while remaining will be kept open for one year till 2022 to ensure that there would not be any disruption to power supply.

However, one of the older reactors will be kept as a "cold reserve" for 2013 if the energy cannot meet the demand in winter and fossil fuel would not be able to make up the scarcity.

The decision was backtracked by the government in March, but the majority of voters had opposed atomic energy in the country. The move came at a high level meeting on Sunday attended by the leaders from the Christian Democrats (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU) and junior coalition partner the Free Democrats (FDP).

Germany is already the world leader in alternative renewable energys and will expand this position.

Will Germany become even more dependent on Russian oil?

They actually want their source of power to be cleaner greener and safer.

By shutting down the nuclear reactors, they dont mean that they will be switching their dependency towards fossil fuels. They want renewable sources to grow in a way never done before.
Currently, renewable sources like wind, solar and hydroelectric power account for 17 % of the total production. The germans want to take that up to 50 % by 2022.
Fascinating indeed.

Germany is taking the right step towards greener and safer planet. Nuclear power plants give abundant power but also give Nuclear Radio Active wastes which take millions of years to decay and humans have not come to better technological position in disposing of the Radio Active waste other than dumping them in the seas and ocean.
After the 2004 Tsunami, a record shows that there is a surge in radio active material deposits in the shore area's near Kalpakam Power Plant area, suggesting that the Indian Navy has been dumping the nuclear waste in waters in shallow shore areas.

Apparently you folks have never heard or looked into thorium-based molten salt nuclear reactors. They are the real deal. China is pursuing it right now.

Thumbs down to the Germans.

Thumbs up to the Germans, they've had enough of your nukes in their homeland.
Introduction of Muslims to European countries is also by design, and you know who, but it's a lousy design.

All your technical achievements are because of the German Jewish people and yet you give a thumbs down to the Germans. They are the pioneers of the modern engineering and manufacturing and administration. They know how to tackle the energy crisis when the N Power Plants are shutdown. You need not advice on what to explore next for their energy needs.

I like it. I think 2022 is a realistic goal. however we need to be careful to keep cost down to make it socially acceptable to people.

Cant type a lot cause i broke my right hand..:frown:

Germans are scared about Nuclear Energy because japan got hit by a Tsunami + earthquake, that won't happen to Germany + we need Nuclear anyway, the Green Party must be having Wet Dreams now.
