Germans are a people of consensus and unity, they are very different than the British or American in this regard who are people of "differences" or "ikhtaf-e-rai" (yes the favorite term of our kalay angraiz type people in Pakistani media). Germans like to blend in among each other, they don't like to stand out among their society. Germans have a strong sense of national and social solidarity which means no work is a taboo irrespective of how dirty it is deemed as long as it benefits the society and the nation.
A German professor will have no problem dining with a German technician or a janitor in his university on the same table. They tend to dress also very similarly irrespective of their financial status, everyone likes to wear a jeans and some kind of shirt, there is no love to be suited booted like in British/American society. I have noticed that they are carbon copies of each other, a rich German lives no different than a poor German and feels the same sense of duty and solidarity towards his society and nation.
Once I heard a German saying to his friend that "French work for a living, whereas Germans live to work." Keeping themselves busy with something productive (cleaning is just one such activity) is in the blood of Germans. Germans don't like fake smiles or fake personalities or niceties, they are very straightforward and will call a spade a spade irrespective of how much it emotionally hurts the person in front of them. They love discipline and order, if something is not in order, a German will always be looking to bring it in order so it looks nice and beautiful.
