New Delhi, July 15 (ANI): German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner has supported India's claim for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), while demanding a spot in the elite group also.

"Both Germany and India were serious contenders of being granted a permanent seat in the Security Council," Steiner said.

"It is very clear that India should have a permanent seat in the Security Council. Germany has the same request, if you look at our contribution, we think it's legitimate that we foster also in this direction, but the point is for us that we, have, in the long term want to achieve a common European foreign policy and of course see this also in the aspect of in speaking with one voice also in the Security Council. But of course, as India endorses the German request, we endorse the Indian quest, there is no doubt," he added.

India has been pushing for reforms in the Security Council - currently comprising of U.S., UK, Russia, France and China as its permanent members - so that the body, formulated after the end of the Second World War, is updated to the current world dominating blocks. India is currently a temporary member of the Security Council, along with Brazil.

Steiner also welcomed the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, which is the expected to be signed by the end of this year.

"I am looking very much forward that we can achieve what the Commerce Minister has envisaged with his colleague from the European Commission and that is to finalise the EU-India free trade agreement (FTA), by the end of this year. And that's the part of it, a long term perspective, and of course a direction to EU-India cooperation," Steiner added.

The target of bilateral trade worth 20 billion euros, as set by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chancellor Angela Merkel was set to be achieved, despite global slowdown, Steiner observed.

"As you know, the EU is the biggest trading partner for India and Germany is the biggest European trading partner. You might know that our political leaders, Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh and Chancellor (Angela) Merkel have set the target for the end of this year to reach the trade volume of 20 billion euros, this target, despite difficulties, of 20 billion we seem to achieve," said Steiner.

He also said that both countries were far from achieving their true capability and the bilateral relations, which he termed as 'perfect in all weathers' was yet to fulfill it's true potential.

"Yes, we have regular governmental consultations; we have close cultural, scientific and technological ties. We have soon 20 billion euro trade volume and this is all nice to have but against the Indian-German potential it's relatively meagre and I think we do not seize enough yet, these infinite opportunities, India and Germany have indeed. So, the sky is the limit, we can do much more," he added. (ANI)

The gist of the story is nothing new. Germany and India are part of the G4 nations intended to support each other in their bid for permanent SC seats.

Exactly and the reality is, that Germany needs India more for this goal, than it would be the other way around. They know India could be an permanent member if they go alone, because all veto powers supports us, but Germany, especially with the failures in foreign policies wrt the Libyan conflict, face way more trouble for the same. Only a reform change, that would include all for nations (German, Brazil, Japan and India), will open a real chance for them.

.....and who are the countries 'bowling'.....

Just saw a thread on Germans asking Pakistanis to come clean on terrorism...
And now Germany bats For India in UNSC....
Clearly RAW is working..What u say ?

Thank you, but we still dont want the eurofighter.

On a serious note, a very positive gesture from Germany. The UN security council is not at all representative of the world. It is only logical that major players like India, Germany, Brazil, South Africa and Japan be represented in UNSC.

almost every major country is supporting our cadidature...

almost every major country is supporting our cadidature...
Including China :woot:
Last year US,UK,France,China and ofcourse RUSSIA all visited and supported us, there may be some question about chinese support but we can say that India is the front runner even in the G4 nations..
But still i think our country should wait for 4-5 years and develop our economy, literacy rate, HDI index, infrastructure, GDP, etc etc and then try to bid in very aggresive manner.. And make whole world realize that India really deserves this place more than any one else on earth..:agree:

Countries who support us-
India's bid for permanent member of UNSC is backed by permanent members namely France,[48] Russia,[49] United Kingdom[50] and United States,[51] although the United States initially opposed India's candidacy on grounds of nuclear proliferation, as India has acquired nuclear weapons and not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.[52] On April 15, 2011, China officially expressed its support for an increased Indian role at the United Nations, without explicitly endorsing India's Security Council ambitions.[53][54] However, recently China has expressed its support for Indian candidacy as a permanent member of the Security Council [55], thus making India the only candidate that has received support from all permanent members and most other nations as well. Countries that explicitly and openly support India for UNSC permanent seat are - Singapore,[56] Israel,[57] Hungary,[58] Poland,[59] Croatia,[60] Belarus,[61] Cyprus,[62] Czech Republic,[63] Romania, Norway,[64] Finland,[65] Slovakia,[66] Portugal,[67] Kazakhstan,[68] Bangladesh,[69] Chile,[70] Australia,[71] Tanzania,[72] Belgium,[73] Armenia,[74] Bulgaria, Greece,[75] Denmark,[76] Iceland,[77] Oman, Kazakhstan,[78] Tajikistan,[79] Laos,[80] Cambodia,[81] Malaysia,[82] Mongolia,[83] Uzbekistan,[84] Kyrgyzstan,[85] Vietnam,[86] Syria,[87][broken citation] Myanmar,[88] Maldives,[89] Qatar,[90] Brunei,[91] Palau,[92] Micronesia,[92] Tuvalu,[93] Chile,[94] Suriname,[95] Bolivia,[96] Guyana,[97] Peru,[98] Cuba,[99] Belize,[100] Bahamas,[101], United Arab Emirates[102], Trinidad and Tobago [103], Dominican Republic[104] and Jamaica[105]
The African Union also supports India's candidacy for permanent member of UNSC.[106]
Pakistan opposes India's candidacy.[107]
Lol at the last line..........
A minimum of 128 votes are required at the general assembely for a reform.......
We have 127/128(depending upon China) countries supporting us + 1 vote from ourselves
So we can attempt a reform, but due to not so many votes for the other G4 , the situation is stuck..........

only Coffee Club is opposing G4's permanent seat in UN,in which Pakistan is a member.

@manofwar,

India will get more than 128 votes if it goes alone.though status of China is not clear on veto power.

China have already supported India's candidature as a permanent UNSC member
China supports India's bid for UNSC seat: Wen
But the thing remains that if India continues to grow economically and militarily and also in terms of Defence tech would it really require the world to endorse its power and Global clout by granting her a seat along with the P5??I don't think so!!In fact we could be better off without a permanent seat at the UNSC since we would be spared of all the obligations and responsibilities. . .

Every time the discussion of UNSC permanent seat comes there is only one question i wanna ask, if India has a support of 2/3rd members of UN including all P-5's (though China's cannot be said for sure but it will definitely not veto if others support) than why India is not insisting on voting & just following the policy of wait & watch??

.....and who are the countries 'bowling'.....

well Pakistan certainly is bowling bouncers in this match....

+ Also, i think that though P-5 supports the expansion of UNSC, they are just paying lip service to it & don't really want it to happen, since any expansion of UNSC (even non permanent members) will slow things down, now if you want to increase the P-5 to P-6 or P-7 or maybe P-9 than there will be more vetos to every issue coming to UNSC which will make it impossible for UNSC to be seen as a credible organisation, case in being is Syria where veto by China & Russia is stopping any step western countries want to take.
