Russia went in with modern forces and based it forces in syria. The russian president visited syria. Iran doesnt come close to that. Assad also requested Russia, not Iran.The amount of hardware that Russia put in this conflict, Iran couldn't match. Lots of other stuff.

Iran is also a rival of USA, but couldn't do all what Russia did for Syria. You can make it about a "USA -Russia" rivalry but Iran cannot come close to what Russia has done for Syria, for whatever reason. Russia went in officially into Syria, used its best equipment and weapons in Syria, Russian president visited Syria.

The way you put it, a USA-Russia enmity has been more fruitful for Syria than a muslim bond and alliance of Syria-Iran. Its is a total dismay.
