The naval exercises of the Russian Northern fleet have been completed, the Defense Ministry’s head of the Northern Fleet’s press service said on Tuesday.

According to Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga, part of the naval exercise were anti-ship, anti-submarine drills with torpedoes and depth charges.

In a designated area of the Barents Sea, Kola Flotilla ships from various forces of the Northern fleet, were part of search and strike groups, searching for submarines.

During the military exercise, the search and striking groups of navy vessels conducted anti-ship maneuvering.

Meanwhile, Russian anti-ship aviation was included in the submarine searching.

During the drill, torpedo firings and depth charges were also used in the exercises.

Another naval exercise between the naval forces of Russia and Norway took place in Barents Sea last week. The main subjects of the two-day military exercise were at-sea rescue operations and training to clean up oil spills.

The aviation arm of the Russian Northern Fleet also held training exercises over the Barents Sea in April.

Russian naval forces hold drills regularly in the Barents Sea, above the Arctic Circle, as the country looks to boost its presence in the Arctic region.

The Russian military aircraft flew above the deck of one of the four NATO ships at an altitude of merely 500 feet as stated by various reports.

“By no means are we labeling this as being safe and professional. We are accepting it as routine, however, we are on the brink of being quite uncomfortable,” an U.S. Defense Department official commented, preferring not to disclose his name.

Although this case differs from the previous one involving a Russian fighter aircraft flying just 10 feet away from a United States plane, this was still a strikingly close distance to not label it as being dangerous.

The incident has not been publicly acknowledged as of the moment. According to CNN’s report some members of the USS Jason Dunham’s crew were able to capture the whole incident on video.

The Pentagon currently has possession over the said video, and it has not been released to the public. On Saturday, the incident was confirmed by a U.S. Defense Department official.

Russia may re-launch the manufacture of air-cushioned landing craft with better capabilities.

The Russian Navy is planning to resume the production of two types of air-cushioned landing craft (LCAC), now equipped with new weaponry and engines.

"We are ready to submit a project of a new LCAC: we have already designed its armament and power systems," the head of the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau told RIA Novosti.

The two projects, 12322 Zubr (NATO name "Pomornik") and 12061 Murena (NATO name "Tsaplya"), were equipped with Ukrainian engines. Now, the CEO said, Russia can substitute them with its own motor systems.

Hovercraft are capable of moving on ground, marsh and water, evade ditches, trenches and minefields, and insert a force into the area deep in the enemy's defense.

The Zubr air-cushion landing ships are the largest in the world. A Zubr can transport three battle tanks, or 10 APCs, and up to 500 troops. The armored vehicle is equipped with two artillery guns, MANPADs, close-in weapon systems, rockets and missiles, and it can lay mines. It has protection from weapons of mass destruction.
The Murena air-cushion landing craft can deliver two APCs or one medium-size tank, or 130 troops. It is armed with the Igla MANPADs, close-in weapon systems and mines.
