RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said “as a nation we are passing through a defining phase. We are critically looking at the mistakes made in the past and trying to set the course for a better future. An intense discussion and debate is natural in this process.”

Speaking to officers at the GHQ, General Kayani said that no individual or institution had the monopoly to decide what was right or wrong in defining national interest and it should emerge only through consensus. He added that Pakistanis have a right to express their opinions and the constitution provides a clear mechanism for it.

Kayani said: “We all have a great responsibility to shoulder. We should learn from our past, try to build the present and keep our eyes set on a better future. We all agree that strengthening the institutions, ensuring the rule of law and working within the well defined bounds of the constitution is the right way forward. Weakening of the institutions and trying to assume more than one's due role will set us back. We owe it to the future of Pakistan, to lay correct foundations, today. We should not be carried away by short term considerations which may have greater negative consequences in the future".

The COAS further said that the Armed Forces drew their strength from the bedrock of public support and national security was meaningless without it.

“Therefore, any effort which wittingly or unwittingly draws a wedge between the people and Armed Forces of Pakistan undermines the larger national interest. While constructive criticism is well understood, conspiracy theories based on rumors which create doubts about the very intent, are unacceptable.”

Kayani added that the integrity and cohesion of the Armed Forces was essentially based on the trust reposed in them by the people of Pakistan. Strengthening this trust would ensure better security of the country. Equally important is the trust between the leaders and the Armed Forces. Any effort to create a distinction between the two, undermines the very basis of this concept and is not tolerated, be it Pakistan or any other country.

“While individual mistakes might have been made by all of us in the country, these should be best left to the due process of law. As we all are striving for the rule of law, the fundamental principle; that no one is guilty until proven, should not be forgotten. Let us not pre-judge anyone, be it a civilian or a military person and extend it, unnecessarily, to undermine respective institutions.”

“All systems in Pakistan appear to be in a haste to achieve something, which can have both positive and negative implications. Let us take a pause and examine the two fundamental questions; One, are we promoting the rule of law and the Constitution? Two, are we strengthening or weakening the institutions? In the ultimate analysis, all of us would have served Pakistan better if history and our future generations judge us positively.”

The corrupt politicians, the corrupt CJ & the corrupt media had this coming & it came from none other than the man himself Gen. Kayani.

The corrupt politicians had crossed the line by doing massive corruption, they have hurt Pakistan very badly & most importantly they have opened Pakistan internal affairs to the world which never should had happened & the crime against Pakistan continues. 2nd The bull sh*t from the CJ which never stops, he is openly targeting Pak Army even after knowing all the facts & truth. 3rd the corrupt media has done it all they have crossed the line a million times. The bottom line these three are complete sold out working for their pimp lord US & they are reading the script well given to them by the US. These are the main things which have pissed Pak Army & I believe they are waiting for a perfect time to take over & INSHAALLAH when they do they will wipe these corrupt bastards for sure. The nation & Pak Army have enough of all this bull sh*t.

I wanted something to come from Gen. Kayani & his speech came at the right time.

I say better corrupt then infertile!

Specially after the Abbotabad raid, I would have had either resigned as the Army chief or would have taken action against those who violated my country's sovereignty instead of threatening my countrymen!

P.S.

Its good for Pakistan that Kiyani stepped out of the bag and showed his intentions, otherwise is kugi ka pata hi nahi chal raha tha k kerna kiya chah raha hai... but atleast he is exposed to be no more different than the previous ones !!

Foojis only understand the language of obey and command and are trained to use bullets. Hence they are not meant to be politicians. Kayani should be quiet and do the job his assigned to do or else he would be considered no different from pervious generals who ruined this country.

I am surprised as how he has been praised by some of the forum members without having an understanding on the ground realities. Mr. Kayani has miserably failed to act like he should. Nobody is above the law wether its a common man or a general. Look at the lavish lives of all these retired generals, enjoying all the perks and benefits and occupying the the expensive lands all over Pakistan.

He has only opened his mouth because supreme court is ordering to investigate about the corrupt generals. These generals are as corrupt as politicians.

every now n then every tom dick and harry crosses our border and kills our soldier and what we do in retaliation. The third class ISPR comes up with a same statement, oh if this thing happens again they would not tolerate.

Lets pray this failed general does not get any more extension. Hes only bad mouthing because supreme court has put their feet on his tail.

Sorry Mr. Kiayani you are not required. Go to hell.

Army is least corrupt of all three major power palyers in the the country; politicians and bureaucracy triumph army many times when it comes to corruption and mis-management. Now, the (sold out) judiciary and (sold out) journalism has also joined their ranks, entering the power politics with their partial agendas.

Looking back at previous governments, I still find military regimes better when it comes to the betterment of quality of life of the populace.

Kayani should show some competency in fighting millitancy and terrorism before opening his foul mouth

Accountability is such a dirty word in Pakistan. No wonder it is avoided at all costs.
