His tenure will be extended only in case of Joint Services Chief.
Field Marshal is ceremonial post for life time. Field Marshal never retires.

He is a good man and even better COAS but i think the time is now right to set the precedent. He should retire and let the new man carry on his work as would be the case anywhere else in the world. Its the institution that counts and not the person.

Few months back there was news about changes in high command structure.
But currently, yes in both cases here, a new four star General will lead the army.

My gut feeling is that General Sharif will refuse these offers. After the Cyprus Campaign, the Turkish Military Chief was offered the promotion to Marshal, but he refused. He was offered an extension, he refused. The government wanted him to take a small increment in his salary at the least, he refused that too. True Men in Uniform carry a sense of pride with themselves..

Kids on this forum don't know the meaning and roles of offered ranks and posts....

JCSC is a ceremonial post means no actual power = retirement (demotion in power)

Field Marshal is also an honorary post no power without the post of Army Chief means retirement further this post does't require extension since in Pakistan army structure Army Chief and Field Marshal can't exist simultaneously.
Only Ayub Khan self as Field Marshal withholding of the post / office of Army Chief also.

Field Marshal post awarded as honor and recognition of services means accomplishment of important campaign and we all know Raheel Sharif till date does't successfully complete any operation (All the campaign and operations still underway).

Why Gen Raheel Sharif wants to or should leave as schedule? to save his reputation and good image.

Yes since Field Marshal was / is a ceremonial post but only one example exist in Pakistani history of Ayub Khan who self promoted himself withholding office and powers of army chief.

I agree, knowing the type of soldier he is, he will refuse the extension and go home with his honour.

I have every faith in the institution of Pakistan Army. The current brass of our Lt Generals is by far the most talented in Pakistan's history. Each and everyone of those Officers is fit enough to lead the Army. The top 5 Officers on the seniority lists are as good as they get.

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff has yet to respond to the federal government’s offer; whether to rise to the rank of the rare Field Marshal or to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Credible sources close told Online that the mentioned posts have been offered to the army chief on behalf of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is reportedly set to leave for the United States this month.

On the prime minister’s instruction, sources say, Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif tabled the options in a meeting with General Sharif.

The two stalwarts of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N, however, told the army chief that, provided he decides to go with one of the two options, no compromise would be made on the balance of power – sources say.

According to sources, before going to US this month, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would decide about the future of Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.

Sources say General Sharif has not responded yet to the government’s offer. They, however, told Online that the prime minister wants to finalise the case pertaining to the incumbent army chief before departing for US.

Provided he doesn’t take extension which he said he won’t, General Sharif will retire from service on November 29 after completing his three-year tenure as the 15th army chief of Pakistan Army.

The appointment of the army chief is in principle for three years subject to extensions granted by the president on recommendation from the prime minister.

It is very much likely that Prime Minister Nawaz might make an important announcement regarding the post of Chief of Army Staff till coming Thursday, sources say.

The incumbent army chief is also popular with the authorities in China, as the security of the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) rests with the armed forces of Pakistan. Beijing wants General Sharif to continue his office till the completion of the project

He is a career general and more concerned about his reputation and career than Pakistan. He wants to be known as a professional.

For Field Martial, war experience is necessary, however, he would technically retain his COAS if he isn't appointed as CJCSC. However, I still wouldn't buy this story its been nothing but hoax. This has been the national habit of our media to churn out all sorts of conspiracy theories using "sources/credible sources" kind of BS.

Five star uniform is just like a medal, which you earn for your extra ordinary achievement. It's a honour. I don't see any reason for rejection.
