GDP growth rate targeted at 8.0pc by 2013: President
President Zillur Rahman said the government, after assuming office, has been working tirelessly to transform Bangladesh into a 'middle income country' by 2021 the golden jubilee of Bangladesh independence.

Addressing the inaugural session of the ninth Parliament for this year at the Sangsad Bhaban Tuesday, the President said, to achieve the goal, the government is working on ensuring overall economic stability, containing prices of essentials, taking long term and sustainable measures against corruption, timely distribution of agricultural inputs, integrated policy formulation and timely steps in power and energy sector, modernising industrial sector, establishing 'Digital Bangladesh' and holding trail of war criminals, reports BSS.

He listed various development initiatives undertaken in its last two years tenure. He said the present government took initiatives for making overall development efforts of the country more coordinated, dynamic and realistic way immediately after assuming office.

"Policies and strategies were devised for swift alleviation of poverty by modifying the 'National Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper -2' in order to make it consistent with the demands of changing days," he said.

"A total of 221,500 persons have found employment in government jobs during the tenure of the present government. "Employment creation for such a huge number of people in such a short time has been a big success," he observed.

In the Doing Business Report 2010 of the World Bank, Bangladesh was placed among the top ten countries that made substantial reforms in removing business related complications and obstacles during the last one year, he added.

Based on preliminary estimates of 5.83 percent GDP growth rate during 2009-10 fiscal year, the per capita income has now reached 751 US dollar and despite the negative impact of global recession, overall annual exports recorded a positive growth, 4.1 percent during 2009-10 fiscal, the President said.

He said the government has set a target to raise the GDP growth rate to 8 per cent in 2013, 10 per cent in 2017 and maintaining the trend up to 2021 for transforming Bangladesh into a middle-income country. Around 91 per cent of the revised ADP for 2009-10 was implemented by June 30 last year, he said, adding that Taka 259.21 billion was spent out of a total Taka 285 billion allocation, which was the highest ever.

He said the expatriate Bangladeshi workers are making an important contribution to the country's economy by sending remittance. The expatriate Bangladeshis sent highest ever amount of Taka 765.06 billion during the year 2010, he added.

President Rahman said Expatriate Welfare Bank has been established as a specialised bank for expatriates with the aim of extending soft loan to unemployed persons to cover their emigration expenses for overseas employment, to encourage the expatriates to invest in Bangladesh and to provide assistance to them for sending remittance.

He said the government has declared the National Industrial Policy 2010 with a pledge to accelerate economic growth through promotion of a thriving and modern industrial sector, halving the number of unemployed, hungry and poverty-stricken population within 2017.

Yes, if it is talk only by the Liliput President and others of AL, then BD will achieve 8.0% of economic growth without any efforts by them. BD people are responsible for all the achievements so far. Politicians are here to take their commissions. Govt should concentrate on building schools, roads/bridges, highways, flood control, agricultural development etc. and take pride of these achievements. In BD, people work relentlessly and the ruling politicians make economic weather forecasts.

Mark my words, it will not happen. Its not because I'm a non-patriotic Bangladeshi or a traitor, but just look at our condition:

1) Worst education system in the world, we just memorize without understanding anything
2) We can't speak English (ie, most of us)
3) We are a very ill-disciplined people, we riot at the slightest opportunity and vandalize factories and machinery.
4) No gas
5) No Electricity
6) Unending traffic jam
7) Increasing political violence, thanks to the Chatra League.

I'm sorry, but we will continue to limp along while other countries, including African countries, overtake us.

The Awami League likes to tell these tall tales always. Just compare how many big statements that they have made about what will happen "in the future" vs. what has been accomplished "now". Can anybody point to a positive accomplishment in the present time? The AL gov't is in power for 2 years, it was making big promises then, even.

@ sami

I am sure lonelyone is BD member. And he is pointing somethings very nicely (quoted below). I think you have a weak point, that is, you are over positive. Also my weak point being, I am pessimist most of the time.

You become so excited to see that our garment, pharmaceutical and ship industries' big revenue. But I see it that business is shifting to BD from developed world just because we have low-cost labors. We are not making any new technology but just using foreign technology by our skilled people.

I see you to point anything that our politicians tell in any seminar but you don't see the negative points pointed by lonelyone???

By the way, I think you know this well: Ek hate tali baje na. So do not depict the things in such a way where any foreigner from any country would mock at us to see this BD section that how our dump intelligence is completely failed to identify and encounter Indian RAW or others. Then what the hell our intelligence does? Licking finger???? Bangladesh is such a country where any foreign agent can do any thing easily without giving us any clue. Perhaps we trust people so easily or we do not search other's motive or we are less smart to identify enemy.

BD's condition is horrible right now:

Dirty city, extreme traffic jam, congested population, scarcity of jobs, over-priced foods, reckless local terrorists, lack of gas, and load shedding is already started before summer. So can GDP growth of 8.0pc by 2013 solve these any problem? Then why so much excitement?

Our politicians are saying everyday that we have to increase food production and electricity, reduce jam and local terrorism in every seminar but they do not know any effective solution how. You will find numerous gaps in our AL politicians' speeches which many general people can not identify.

And about Indian members: I think many Indian members are in flexible jobs like IT where they get easy chance to use net in their work time. And some people are very talent who can do multi tasks. But I can see even Mods of this forum take rest but .........................................

Now there is an interesting video for you:

Well pointed out....something i would like to mention about the job market is that it is not getting anywhere for quite a prolonged period of time. I have known people having one or two masters degree from any local private university and ending up working as a teacher. Plus opportunities in government universities is only limited to either very smart students or lobbyists....anyway or the other, it does not make a difference as our universities have no recognized accreditation except for a few....my expectation is job market will get worse and unemployment will rise in years to come....

When students dont get opportunities, they go abroad but off course those who can afford....and spend rest of their lives working for a foreign country....i ought to agree that i am no different....only if our country provided better opportunities....look at neighbor India, probably the best example you can get against it...

Cheers!!!

I think you are being pessimistic. Your country has all the above said problems. But here is my reason why Bangladesh will grow.

1. Relatively peaceful country. People are tolerant. People are pretty homogeneous, hence less of clashes.

2. Government is pretty stable. Functioning democracy.

3. In spite of all the cry about India being the enemy, you guys don't have a real enemy who would attack you. So no need to spend too much on defense.

4. Population control.

5. There is so much more to develop and development is inevitable. The pace of development may vary but the only way BD is going to go is forward!

All the best!

The 8.0% is very ambitious, maybe too ambitious.

I am with you on your number one point, but disagree somewhat with the rest. There are quite a number of infrastrucrural programs in development. This includes power and transportation. I am no fan of AL, but BNP did almost nothing in infrastructure. If BNP comes back to power they must continue and add more programs as needed.

Not being able to speak english has not hampered the growth of country like S Korea or China.

And no terrorism in bangladesh.

8% is obviously impossible. Ground reality suggests it would fly between 6-6.8 % at max provided there's no military coup in the next few years.

Edit: Just discovered this was my 500th post and its all crap

You are deluded with awami propogandas. Please stop making irrational comments, Specially when you don't live there yourself.

1. People are not tolerant. Matter of fact people even within the the same politcal parties are constantly killing themselves even to this days. Oppositions are being harrassed on a regular basis. Price hikes have reached a level beyond affordable.

2. Functioning democracy? what we have now is called fascism. Read the recent municpial elections, how the ruling govt activists snatched ballots and oppositions beaten up.

3. Let's not even get into a debate about india. Even if you leave all the conspiracies behind, indian businesses are a direct threat to our national assets. Not to mention, regular BSF killings taking place constantly. Don't forget when North Korea killed only 2 members of south Korea, it was on a verge of a war. We are small, maybe thats why we are being tolerant, but trust me, if we were as big as you. We would be on a war by now.

4. Population control? what population control? you cannot compare bangladesh with india and pakistan because we are much much smaller. we already have the highest population density in the world.

5. Development is not envitable. It only happens, when its made to happen. the opposite of development is also possible and is a happening now.

Makes you wonder if some of these people are Bangladeshis at all, or they are from a certain country who would rather see Indians and Bangladeshis at each others throats.

Anywho, I think its really important to set goals. Without a target you don't get anywhere. If not 2021 then come 2025, Bangladesh will surely join the middle income club. Aim for the star and you will at least reach the moon
