ISLAMABAD:
The critical Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project is entering the implementation phase as Pakistan’s state-owned firm Inter-State Gas Systems and Tadbir Energy Costar Iranian Co will sign a construction contract for laying the pipeline in Pakistan today (Friday).

Adviser to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain told this to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources in a meeting here on Thursday. Engineer Tariq Khattak chaired the meeting.

Pakistan and Iran are forging ahead with the project despite opposition from the US, which has imposed sanctions on Tehran for its alleged nuclear programme.

According to Hussain, the Iranian company will complete the process of constructing the pipeline in 15 months.

Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) will also take part in the construction work.

Sources said Pakistan and Iran had finalised per kilometre cost of laying the pipeline, which will be of 42 inches and spread over 781 km, as well as markup on loan being provided by Tehran.

The per kilometre cost will be Rs190 million and markup on $500 million loan will be 3% per annum. “Iran had demanded 4% interest on loan,” a source said. The financing will be for 20 years with a five-year grace period.

Good news, but construction on Pakistan side shall be done by Pakistan companies.

Does any one knows the agreed price of gas?

.
this pipeline will bring peace and economic development to many parts of Asia if it would be extended through Pakistan to China and India...

.
Only one gas pipe line? let's wait until it start pumping the gas!

In any case, this pipeline is not going any where, without paying stretigic transit fees.

India charge every thing which pass through its air and it is not even stretigic.

well about the price I don't knew but it certainly would be cheaper than importing LNG with ship .

about the building pipeline , does Pakistan have firms that are experienced in lying such pipeline , because for example when welding the pips together they can't use somebody who is only trained for normal welding and not for such pipes. also can Pakistan firms install the pipes as fast as Iran can ?

We have firms who can build pipeline but they will not do because of sanctions.

Pakistani companies (construction & financial) backed off to avoid sanctions

A contract means economy discussions are done.

Did any of you check the link and the full news?

it says, pakistani gas company is about to default. It cannot work beyond the middle of this year.

All this doesn't bode well for the project.

Who knows?

Yara, sometimes we don't have expertise in "everything". We need to follow the cheapest route, whosoever builds it the cheapest gets the contract. Simple as that.

Why would they care? There aren't any big "global" Pakistani players in the field anyways!
