@brother iraqi members: guys im younger than the war...... i wasnt even born then..........

but a question that i always had was that iranian motivation to participate in the war was clear:
to defend the country

but on the other hand we had iraqi people participating in the war; what was their motivation?
iran was a muslim country and a brother of iraq (although we hadnt good relations but people r different than politics)

I wasn't born either..

The main motive behind the war was to capture what was seen as Iraqi territory

It was also a war to fend of the growing influence of shia, khomaini and at the time Iran which was seen as a threat to Iraq and other arab countries. They used to call Iran the police of the middle east, because it was a powerful country and the neighbours didn't like that. Iraq tried to take advantage of the islamic revolution chaos to capture ahwaz, Khuzestan.

Of course a major part of the war was fought mostly on behalf of the gulfies who are too scared to fight without uncle america..

saddam was a pan arab lunatic, dragged iraqis from one war to another. Thought he was the saviour of Iraqis and great Mesopotamia.
