FWO Restored Jaglot-Skardu Road

FWO has restored Jaglot-Skardu Road for all kind of traffic on 5 Apr 2020. The road was blocked by large boulders due to heavy landsliding in Tungush area. FWO employed heavy machinery including 1 x loader, 2 x excavators and 2 x compressors. The road was cleared within 20 hours and opened for all kind of traffic.

The dangers of working on this road can bee seen in this picture.

.

The road starts off the Karakoram Highway, in Gilgit, the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan within the namesake district, at an elevation of 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above the sea level.

The road is paved but includes gravel sections. It goes along the River Indus. It’s an all-weather road. The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.

The travel is around 8 hours. The roads can be blocked for weeks at a time depending on conditions (though two to five days is more normal). This road was constructed by Pakistan Army Engineers with association of Chinese Engineers in 1982.

FWO is working on widening & improvement of Jaglot Skardu Road project (JSR). Length of road is 160 km. The widened & improved road will play a significant role to bring economic development & social benefits to residents of Skardu on its completion. JSR will be of vital importance in providing access to tourism sites and easy access to health facilities. Despite being landslide prone area, unfriendly weather, and harsh environment, FWO is performing up to the expectations.
