Future of politics will be Asia; US betting on India's future

13 OCT, 2011

WASHINGTON: Declaring that the "future of politics will be decided in Asia", the US has said that India will be the linchpin of it new vision of an economically integrated and politically stable South and Central Asia.

"The future of politics will be decided in Asia, not Afghanistan or Iraq, and the United States will be right at the centre of the action," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote in an Op-Ed in Foreign Policy Magazine outlining US priorities after the end of Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Describing China as "one of the most prominent" of emerging partners", Clinton said the US was setting its sights on "enhancing coordination and engagement among the three giants of the Asia-Pacific: China, India, and the United States".

"Among key emerging powers with which we will work closely are India and Indonesia, two of the most dynamic and significant democratic powers of Asia," Clinton said describing them as "key drivers of the global economy' whose "importance is likely to grow in the years ahead".

Noting that President Barack Obama told the Indian parliament last year that the relationship between India and America will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century, rooted in common values and interests, she said there are still obstacles to overcome and questions to answer on both sides.

But "the United States is making a strategic bet on India's future - that India's greater role on the world stage will enhance peace and security, that opening India's markets to the world will pave the way to greater regional and global prosperity".

It was also betting "that Indian advances in science and technology will improve lives and advance human knowledge everywhere, and that India's vibrant, pluralistic democracy will produce measurable results and improvements for its citizens and inspire others to follow a similar path of openness and tolerance".

"So the Obama administration has expanded our bilateral partnership; actively supported India's Look East efforts, including through a new trilateral dialogue with India and Japan; and outlined a new vision for a more economically integrated and politically stable South and Central Asia, with India as a linchpin.

America should first make sure they go where they were prior to this recession . India still has a very long way to go .

They are trying to address the recession.

It's all about money when it comes to India. It's a very attractive arms market considering India is a large country and nearly 70% of their weapon inventory are all imported. And India's economy is vast and strong compared to most neighbors, apart from China.

And frankly, the weapons manufacturing sector is one of the only few viable export oriented industries in the USA right now. The Middle East is a big destination, now they are trying to market in South Asia.

The Americans even offered India to join the JSF program. Now, considering India was a Cold War foe, that powerful offer speaks volume. And they are still trying to sell the F-35 to India. The USA has already sold P-8Is, C-130Js and C-17s. More are surely to come.

So you see, they are trying to address the economy in the long term. It's all about the money. And of-course control since China is gradually becoming very powerful by each passing day. Every senior American politician is terrified of China for reasons best known to themselves. So, they'd try to secure their interests in whatever ways possible.

That appears to be their strategy.

Yes, i think you are right , however i believe that if the american economy improves and goes back to the years prior to 2008 , they won't need to hedge their bets on anyone else .

betting by US is fine as long as there is no fixing!!

.
Not really betting on indias future they are trying to divide asia. Very old and tried policy of divide and rule.

Well, that was the years prior to 2008. There is simply no 'quick-fix' to the current economic problems. Full recovery will take a long time.

In the first place, there was no united Asia. Everything about Asia is fragmented

They will recover , if they could recover from the great depression of the 1930s and if the europeans could reocver from the destruction of the second world war , the US will surely recover the last recession .

however that will take them the next 5-10 years .
