On the afternoon of August 16, the 300,000 tonne VLCC No. 80 ship built by CSIC group for the China Merchants Energy corp. was successfully undock, which laid a solid foundation for demonstration and prototyping of wind-sail technology for VLCC ship. Next, the ship will perform system installation and commissioning.
The “Wind Sail Technology Demonstration Application Development” project is a national high-tech ship scientific research plan led by CSIC. It is an innovative key project approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology intended for energy conservation and emission reduction for large ship. The application on the VLCC ship is first in China. Whether considering the sail prototype size or the tonnage of the installed ship, the project is considered a domestic and international industry innovation and fills in blank project. Since the start of the project on September 1, 2017, CSIC organized the participating units to successively overcome a large number of technical problems such as the development of technology, equipment and procedure for the sail prototype, and completed important parts such as structural component production and land-based test. Recently, the first sail prototype was successfully manufactured and roadbed test was successfully completed. All important milestones of the sail project were realized as planned, which created favorable conditions for subsequent ship installation and commissioning and navigation demonstration.

海洋强国路【凯旋归来!大船集团牵头的“风帆技术示范应用开发”项目风帆样机圆满完成航海试验】10月20日至24日,经过5天的海上试验,“风帆技术示范应用开发”项目圆满完成海试任务,达到预期目的,凯旋归来。本次风帆航海试验的成功,充分证明了翼型帆方案是有效的,风力助推超大型船舶的效果显著。在全球节能减排的大背景下,风力资源将作为船舶节能减排的重要手段在更多的船舶上推广应用。
本次风帆样机实船试验在大船集团承建的招商轮船30万吨VLCC上进行。中船重工科技与信息化部、招商船东、中船重工七O二所、中国船级社以及风帆项目牵头单位大船集团相关设计、建造以及风帆制作单位等共50人参加了本次航海试验。
为了做好航海试验,大船集团牵头做了充分的航海试验准备。研究编制了风帆样机航海试验程序,并通过专家评审;编制了风帆操作流程、应急操作预案、试验计划、安全评审等,为风帆试航顺利实施提供了保障。
本次航海试验主要开展了:风帆报警点及控制系统试验、风帆演示性试验、风帆操纵性能试验和风帆助推验证(含EEDI)试验等。试验完全按照预定测试程序有序开展。通过对现场实测数据初步分析,风帆助推效果符合设计预期。本次风帆航海试验后,将按照研制任务书的要求对采集数据进行全面的分析与评估,以完成最终项目的考核指标报告。
“风帆技术示范应用开发”项目是大船集团围绕主力船型节能减排的创新性重点项目,在VLCC实船上的应用在国内尚属首次,该项目不论从风帆样机的尺寸,还是所安装船舶的吨位,均属国内和国际业界的创新和填补空白项目。自2017年9月1日风帆样机开工以来,大船集团在中船重工集团的精心组织下,牵头组织国内顶级优势团队,从风帆翼型设计、水动力分析,到结构、液压、电气设计,再到各类风险评估、图纸审核等,开展了大量的研究、论证、计算、试验、评审和分析,陆续攻克风帆样机研制工艺技术、工艺流程、工艺装备等大量技术难题,完成了结构部件制作、陆基试验、海上试验等重要节点。

China International Import Expo
The nation’s first contract to build cruise ships has been signed at the expo.
China State Shipping Corporation Limited reached the agreement with US-based Carnival Corp and Italy-based Fincantieri for six large-scale cruise liners.
The companies which will build the liners are China State Shipbuilding and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.
The first 135,550-ton cruise liner will have a length of 323.6 meters, a width of 37.2 meters, a height of 72.2 meters and the maximum draft of 8.55 meters. Its fastest speed will be 41.85 kilometers per hour.
There will be more than 2,000 cabins on the ship, among them will be 34 suites, 287 sea view rooms and 969 rooms with balconies.
The ship will accommodate as many as 5,260 passengers.
The 16-story cruise ship will have a variety of entertaining and recreational facilities. Apart from its dining room, performance center, and amusement center, it is equipped with a shopping plaza, making it a “holiday village on the sea.”
The liners are the only high-tech ships that have not yet been built in China.

YANGON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is negotiating with a Chinese consortium to carry out a strategic deep-sea port in Kyaukphyu, western Rakhine state, as part of the planned special economic zone (SEZ) in the region, according to a report of the official Global New Light of Myanmar Sunday.
The negotiation between Myanmar's Commerce Ministry and the China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) is expected to reach an agreement soon.
Kyaukphyu deep-sea port project represents part of the economic corridor of China's Belt and Road Initiative and the two countries are approaching this in a way to ensure it become a win-win situation all round, said Myanmar Minister of Commerce Dr. Than Myint.
The sea-port project will bring about the development of Rakhine state, the emergence of job opportunities for local people and the development of the country, he said.
A consortium of six group companies, led by China's CITIC, won tender in December 2015 for the implementation of two projects -- an industrial park and a deep sea port on 1,737 hectares of land, two of the three components of the project of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The CITIC Consortium also comprises China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC), China Merchants Holdings (International) Co. LTD(CMHI), TEDA Investment Holding(TEDA) and Yunnan Construction Engineering Group(YNJG) as well as Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group Company Limited (CP Group).
The CITIC Consortium will form project joint ventures together with Myanmar local enterprises for the construction and operation of the two projects which will be implemented under the framework of the "Myanmar Special Economic Zone Law" promulgated by Myanmar government in 2014.
The deep-sea port project consists of the MADE Island Terminal and YANBYE Island Terminal, totally with 10 berths. It also includes the road and bridge connecting the industrial park and deep sea port. The deep sea port project will be constructed in four phases, with a total construction duration of 20 years.
After the completion of project, the expected annual capacity of the deep sea port will be 7.8 million tons of bulk cargo and 4.9 million TEU containers. With the increased container throughput, the deep sea port may update to the complete container terminals, with the annual capacity of 7 million TEU containers.
Myanmar's parliament voiced support of the SEZ project saying that it would be beneficial for the economic growth of the country, particularly for that of Rakhine state, while CITIC consortium said the SEZ development would improve local people's employment and livelihood as more than 100,000 new jobs will be created for local people every year.
By the year of 2025, 90 percent of the project managers' positions will be undertaken by Myanmar local people. Once in full operation, the two projects will bring approximately 10 billion U.S. dollars in annual GDP growth for Myanmar.
According to the plan, Myanmar government will accumulatively receive 15 billion U.S. dollars of tax revenue from the two projects during the whole concession period. When the concession period is expired, both projects will be handed over to the Myanmar government.
CITIC consortium has pledged to build a "green, environment-friendly, beautiful" industrial park and deep sea port with consistent environmental evaluation to be made during the operation period, while attaching importance to corporate social responsibility and public welfare.
Alot more to learn from the Koreans, one thing they lack is military orders. Apart from the smaller players, most bigger SOEs are well protected in times of crises with naval orders. Technologically, I think we are on par with Korea, skills wise, we might need to improve more to increase efficiency. South Korean shipbuilders won 1.63 million compensated gross tonnage (CGT) for 28 vessels in September, accounting for 65 percent of the world's total of 2.52 CGT for 75 vessels.
The South Korean shipbuilding industry, which has lost ground to China, is gradually making its way out of the depression. The encouraging fact is that South Korean shipbuilders keep ahead of Chinese companies in terms of new order receipts. The number of orders for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and very large crude-oil carriers (VLCCs), which are the strengths of South Korean shipbuilders, is on the increase and the price of vessels is also going up.
According to British shipbuilding and marine industry tracker Clarkson Research Services on October 10, South Korean shipbuilders won 1.63 million compensated gross tonnage (CGT) for 28 vessels in September, accounting for 65 percent of the world's total of 2.52 CGT for 75 vessels. South Korean shipyards maintained lead in the global order book for the fifth consecutive month in September. Chinese companies had a 14 percent market share with 350,000 CGT, or 17 orders, over the same period. Chinese firms, which swept orders based on the government’s support and low wages, are now struggling. Some market experts say that China’s government-led shipbuilding industry is exposing the limitations of technology and quality.
As South Korean shipbuilding companies put up a good show, they are highly likely to reclaim the number one spot in terms of global ship orders this year. Based on the cumulative new order volume in the January-September period, South Korea topped with the largest share of 45 percent, or 9.5 million CGT, far ahead of China with 6.51 million CGT.
This is largely due to the increase in the number of orders for vessels in which South Korea has a competitive edge. The price of VLCCs has sharply dropped and the number of its new orders is growing because of higher oil prices. The number of new orders for LNG carriers is also on the increase thanks to greater demand for LNG. The number of orders for VLCCs and LNG carriers grew from 14 and 10, respectively, in 2016 when the global shipbuilding market fell into the worst recession, to 38 and 43 this year.
In addition, offshore plants show signs of recovery. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. signed a US$450 million (511.56 billion won) deal with U.S. oil company LLOG Exploration to deliver a floating production storage and offloading unit in the Gulf of Mexico. It came as the company's first offshore plant order in four years after November 2014. Since oil prices show an upward trend, the number of new offshore plant orders can rise in the future.
On the other hand, the number of new orders for bulk carriers, which has been the strength of Chinese shipbuilders, is rapidly decreasing due to oversupply. The number of orders for bulk carriers was 353 last year but it halved to 185 as of the end of the third quarter this year. The market already believes that South Korea will reclaim the top spot, which was yielded to China for six years in a row from 2012 to last year.
The fact that the price of materials and labor costs are going up in China is a burden on Chinese shipbuilding companies. Chung Seok-joo, director of the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association, said, “Chinese shipbuilders have low technical skills but they are raising ship prices to offset the rise in material prices and labor costs. As a result, their competitiveness is weakening.” In fact, Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding, which was considered a blue-chip company, went bankrupt in May this year due to the deteriorating business environment.
Rising vessel prices are also expected to improve Korean shipbuilders’ profitability. According to Clarkson, the Newbuilding Price Index (NPI) recorded 130 points in September, surpassing the 130 level for the first time after March 2013.
However, a considerable number of experts say that it is too soon to be optimistic about the situation. South Korea’s “big three” shipbuilders still show poor performance this year. The securities industry predicts that the operating loss of Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries will come to 376.5 billion won (US$331.19 million) and 250.3 billion won (US$220.18 million), respectively, this year. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., which is supported by the government, is the only company that is forecast to show a gain. An executive from the industry said, “This year, the number of new orders for vessels that are the strength of South Korean shipbuilding firms is on the increase and South Korean companies are winning more orders. However, it is too soon to talk about the revival. They have to improve efficiency by selling off their assets and cutting costs.”

I was supposed to be based in OKPO 2 years ago, the effect of the oil slump is really serious. Thousands got laid off, they are highly dependent on O&G vessels. Having said that, you gotta admire Korean work ethic and efficiency. There is where China can learn.Korea is back on track because of the circonstances : Oil and LNG tankers in high demand while at the same time bulk carrier are in oversupply. It's just a temporary happy moment for Korea.
