A K Antony on Wednesday assured the Rajya Sabha that the first French Scorpene submarines will roll out of Mazagon Docks in June 2015.

The minister said all the six submarines under Project-75 were being constructed concurrently at MDL. The sixth submarine is scheduled for delivery in September 2018.

The over Rs 23,000 crore project, of course, is running three years behind schedule, with the Navy grappling with just 14 ageing diesel-electric submarines at present. Moreover, the defence ministry is yet to launch the long-delayed Project-75India, under which the Navy hopes to acquire six advanced stealth submarines.

These submarines, armed with both land attack missiles as well as air-independent propulsion for greater endurance, will come for over Rs 50,000 crore.

Antony, on his part, said, "Modernisation of the submarine fleet is being undertaken on a progressive basis to maintain combat worthiness."

"The equipment/systems that have undergone/are undergoing modernization are combat system, sensors, navigation complex, communication suite and auxiliary equipment," he added.

The Scorpene for IN inherently has some IN-specific features and a high level of customization aswell as,in some cases, more advanced tech especially given the fact the Scorpenes for IN are going to be newer than Malaysia and that the IN has more $$$ to spend. Additionally the Scorpenes for IN will have Indian technology fitted. The P-75 is pratically (on the outside) idenitcal in dimensions to all other Scorpenes but for the follow-on order-P-75I DCNS is offering an Indian-specific design which is "stretched" and features AIP.

NO!the Indian version will not be any different but will just be manufactured under a technology transfer agreement by Mazagon docks .The last 2 subs will be fitted with indigenous AIP. DCNS has offered a bigger version of the scorpene to the IN for the follow on requirements of 6 subs!

If its TOT/R&D, do expect some delay...if u see the recent acquisition of defense hardware from the US, they have delivered before time…AC Vikramaditya got delayed primarily due to renegotiations of original contracts…in the past we saw major delays from DRDO but there was a reason for it, almost most of the things they had to develop from scratch with almost no prior experience and little budget…Also, we don’t have international hiring practice based on merit/need/expertise in our defense establishment…But DRDO has been paying back with dividend….look at their performance in last couple of years..back to back success on highly strategic defense systems…..

I love it that India and France are working so closely together, you guys can rely on us, in fact I think we have proven that you can trust us as well.

The french has helped us a lot. We wont forget that. Money will flow where there is friendship and trust.

Hope the new president keeps up the momentum.

The first 4 for IN will look the same, but might have internal changes with Indian, or other equipment. The last 2 will be streched to add another modul that will house the AIP propulsion:

The French have been a reliable and dependable partner for India for many decades now. Hopefully this relationship continues in a bigger way into the future but the French cease dealing with Pakistan on the military level. Also hopefully the new Socialist president doesn't put a spanner in the works f any ongoing projects like the Scorpene, MMRCA, M2K UPG, Mig-29K sub-systems, MKI sub-systems (etc) and civil nuke programs. We have not heard anything to suggest this could happen so here's hoping....
