A deal is a deal. And money has been paid. Either the French return Russian money with an indemnity or France loses credibility (and rightfully so) as an arms exporter as well as the reputation of a nation with any kind of independent foreign policy.

In the late 90s or early 2000s, Israel backed out of a 2 billion dollar deal with China for Phalcon AEWAC systems and Israel returned the money plus ended up paying 350 million in penalties.

A deal is a deal, only if you follow laws. Putin does not follow laws, and therefore should expect equal treatment.
