France wants important partner India to play more critical global role

Toronto
June 27 (ANI): French President Nicholas Sarkozy on Saturday described India as one of his country's most important partners, and urged it to play a more critical role on the international stage, including in the ongoing Group of Twenty (G-20) deliberations.

Sarkozy conveyed this view to Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the fourth Group of Twenty summit being held here.

He told Dr. Singh with France taking over the G-20 presidentship later this year, he was looking to India for greater cooperation in G-20.

Recalling the twelve-year-old strategic partnership between India and France, Dr. Singh said he looked forward to President Sarkozy and French First Lady Carla Bruni's visit to India later this year.

According to a government spokesman, both leaders discussed the outcomes of Sarkozy's visit to India.

President Sarkozy recalled Dr. Singh's visit to Paris for the French National Day celebrations in July 2009, including the laudable step of sending a tri-services contingent to take part in a military parade.

Sarkozy reiterated his country's support for India acquiring permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and New Delhi's efforts on the counter-terrorism efforts. :yahoo:

On bilateral ties, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the status of France as India's largest trading partner among European Union countries. By Ashok Dixit (ANI)

Europe proposes UN Security Council reforms: Sarkozy

Europe's most powerful states have proposed concrete reforms to the UN Security Council to give developing powers more say, the French president said on Saturday at a Group of Eight (G8) summit in Canada.

The council has five permanent members with veto powers: Britain, China, France, Russia and the US. Other major states, such as Germany and India, have been calling for years for that elite group to be expanded.

"France and Britain have proposed an interim reform of the UN Security Council. (German) Chancellor (Angela) Merkel supports this reform," Nicolas Sarkozy said.
Diplomats from the countries involved would not be drawn on the substance of their proposal.

But the president of the Council of European Union member states, Herman Van Rompuy, said that it was "an important initiative to rebalance, after 50 years, the composition of the UN Security Council".

Developing states argue that the Security Council is unbalanced because it is dominated by developed states and has no permanent place for new powers such as Brazil, India and South Africa.

There was "extensive discussion" of the proposal at a G8 dinner Friday, Van Rompuy said.

Four of the five veto holders - Britain, France, Russia and the US - are G8 members. Their leaders are set to hold talks with China's president later Saturday at a meeting of the Group of 20 leading economies in Toronto.

Fortunately there are basis for relationships that go beyond the geographical location of a country.

Also, Achievement is required. Means are incidental..

yes, the basis is that you are needed

for eg, cold war india not wanted not liked, post cold war india wanted and liked, geddit?

at this point the typical response it not to disagree but say something like "yeh but times change and now we are in the present..." but in truth if you guys were the high achievers you like to think you are you would have grown in your own right and been a superpower-----centuries ago!!

denial is for free so delude away!!!

Yes we are in the present and we are the future as well. So why think of the past.

It is not about the cold war. Its the economy overhaul which changed the picture. From a bottomless aid pit which was hated because it did not sell its principles of NAM, now India is the third biggest, soon to be second biggest market for basic goods. Now isnt that an achievement?

But I agree on the basic point. Indians are lazy *** people.

to bring you guys a much needed dose of reality?

are default geo political circumstances dictated by others really a cause for self congratulation?

it would be like a pakistani celebrating their relationship with the US in the 80's in the fight against the soviets

Small correction to the bold part.. The basis is that you are needed on a sustainable basis. All relationships that do not have long term stickiness, end sooner or later. Like a one night stand :). Kam khatam, pehchan khatam. You guys have been thru that once.. Innit??

As a nation, we may or may not be extremely high achievers, but we havent done as bad as some of the other nations of the same vintage (post independence). Sure there is a huge headroom for improvement and god willing that headroom will keep shrinking as we keep improving.

Indeed India has made a lot of ground on economic front, but there are still grounds the size of Jupiter to cover. Corruption from bottom to top is only one hurdle (like Pakistan). For more, there are so many different political ideologies, social systems, religious communities and nationalistic peoples, that it would be next to impossible for India to ever match China.

No prejudice..... but they say the bigger the ship, the sooner it sinks...... there simply are too many & too big problems for the indian government to cope with.
