Increasing firepower won't help Vietnam at all. Why?

First, China has no intention to invade Vietnam, because China has Chinese dream which need patience and peace. China will not invade Vietnam just for some small islands. Spending too much on military power will slow down your development.

Second, it will create more anxiety of China. which is not good for Vietnam. China will relocate more resource to contain Vietnam from somewhere else. No matter what you do, China has 10 times more resources.

Third, Sea Power is very expensive. There is no guerrilla war tactic nor bush-fighting. It's very transparent. It purely depends on technology and resource. China will be world class Sea Power, much more powerful than anyone else, close to US in 20-30 years. There is no way Vietnam can have meaningful Sea Power with 220 billion GDP. Even UK and France has very limited Sea Power.

Fourth, China has built 7 islands in SCS. You can't remove them. Otherwise it will give China good excuse to remove all your inhabitant in SCS.

The only realistic way for Vietnam to solve this dispute is through dialog. The earlier the better for Vietnam. China will increase Sea Power dramatically in next 20-30 years. Vietnam is losing bargaining chip day by day.

Philippines is negotiating with China for joint exploitation in Reed Bank. Malaysia will do the same sooner or later. You will be the only one has dispute with China one day. No one will help you except some countries outside of the region. What they want is inciting a war between China and Vietnam so that they can sell weapon to you as well as containing China.

Just think about it. Let us be realistic and pragmatic.

Any countries have Hawks and Doves. I never said China is peace loving country or never threatened other countries with force. But relatively, China is more peaceful than other great powers.

Believe me, if Vietnam was in Mexico location and has huge territory dispute with US, you are gone already. Or if Vietnam was close to Russia and fought with Russians, Vietnamese either assimilated into Russians or wiped out, more likely wiped out.

China has options, peaceful or not very peaceful. It's jungle world when there are huge interest conflicts, let's us be honest, China is assertive but not aggressive yet.

Vietnam War is aggressive when US is 10 thousands kilometers away from Vietnamese and has little interest conflicts.

The world is very cruel when you has serious interest conflicts with great power. Agree or disagree, China is very self-constrained so far.

One more thing, just take a look at neighbors of Israel. None of them have happy ending.
