I used to work with a very decent Hindu Indian lady whose family were from Multan originally before partition. Get the exports up, increase tax revenues, cut back on spending/imports and this is very doable.

If the global trading currency changes magically to Pound or Yen or Gold, nothing will change. Fundamental problem is a large nation, 5th in the world by population, cannot produce enough (of anything that the rest of the world wants), to allow it to buy necessities like food, fuel, medicine etc., This is a problem of production vs. consumption, not currency.

Agree. Pakistan has nothing significant to offer for exports. Firstly, as you said its the 4th or 5th most populous country. Naturally, as there are severe energy shortages and increase in demand, economically it would have a direct impact on the industries. Secondly, while there is no shortage of labour, the country, however, lacks a skilled population. I don't know to laugh or cry when I read governments in Pakistan say chest thumping that it has "exported unskilled labourers to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar" Like what does that even mean? Yes they might be contributing to FDI but it doesn't sound like a plan to develop your country. You could instead just train them and if you don't have the facilities ask China to make them skilled so their companies can build cheap here. Finally, there is no doubt that Pakistan a is heavily agriculture dependent country and that's fine but there is a lot, lot, more that can be done in this area too to compete against regional rivals starting from enhancing yield to creating byproducts demanded in the world and clearly in this regard, the role model should be the Netherlands. I don't know if it's lack of will or wisdom but they really need to prioritize the potential.

Having said all that, fundamental issues will not be solved soon. It will take years and decades as long as there is political stability, continuity, vision, and plan. Unless China and the Middle East decide to ditch the dollar, Pakistan has no immediate way of getting out of debt. They will either have to pay or continue to roll over.

Even if China and Middle East decide to ditch the dollar, the accumulated debts are still payable, either in dollar or in new acceptable currency. Then, new currency must be earned to pay for deficits in food, fuel, medicines etc., or else, new debts contracted in new currency. If your pants are short, you won't solve the problem by measuring it in centimeters instead of inches and saying, hurrah, it is longer now.

With IMF deadlock, I cannot see how a deficit of at least about $20 Billion will be filled in 2023 unless the people permanently get used to shortages and/or price inflation of food, fuel and medicines. Industries are pretty much shut/shutting down. Everyone has to pray very hard there won't be floods this year as those affected last year are still waiting for succor. The dance and drama over politics and elections would be satirical but for the tragedy that it is covering up.
