For me, I'm still 28, still too young to get married. Once I finish my Ph.D, and get into corporate world / or academic field, I'll see about making a family. Right now, professional stability is my #1 concern. On my 3rd academic year for my Ph.D in Industrial & Organizational Psychology Program; just 2 more years to go.

You should make a family first, then talk about career, this is old Chinese rule. I think Ph.D is a waste of time, but if you really want to be an scholar, just do it. I feel like your major is a little bit weird, if you go to a company, which position is suitable?

In 2012, the population was 135404, according to official census data. We may assume that currently it is closer to 1.4 than 1.3, if we ever round the figure. Besides, it is often believed that the population is higher than official estimations.

By the time I am finished my PhD and secure a position in corporate world in either here in US or in Japan (Toyota, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries), then i can have the means to give a good life for my family. I want to make sure my children will be able to get what they want.

Depends on the type of Psychology. Don't expect a 6 figure salary if you're going into Clinical Psychology.

Addendum: Ph.D in I/O psychology is a higher form of Industrial Engineering. A lot of managerial roles are juxtaposed. In fact, several of my doctoral cohort members have their Masters in Industrial Engineering, or Business Management.

My friend, in Japan, I can start with about (USD equivalent) = $105,000 - $110,000.

My uncle works for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a senior IE (Industrial Engineer) and earns (USD equivalent) around $250,000.

Its a small sacrifice, my man. You work / study hard for a bit, and quality of life will be very high.

Plus, there's a lot of leverage / leeway with Ph.D. You can work in corporate structure, and even work on the side to teach in university. A lot of Ph.Ds do this; they do adjunct teaching for universities on the side, too. Extra income. Imagine, they compensate adjunct professors (who hold a Ph.D) around $1,500 - $1800 per credit). So teaching a 4 credit class on the side = $7,200. This is just part time work on the side.

Maybe good for beer money, or dining out money.

One needs to have a very very patient mind to walk your path . I did my engineering at 22 and got a healthy package straight away . I just could not study anymore . 28 and still studying......... .

Its a lot of sacrifice, @Backbencher . Seeing many of my friend(s) from high school getting married / having kids is one bad side. But, as i always say, everything has its time.
